Chapter 4
Isolde Langley swayed unsteadily, as though her legs couldn’t support her.
She collapsed delicately into Damien Sterling’s arms, tears shimmering in her eyes.
Her voice quivered as she spoke.
“Damien, don’t blame Celeste. It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have come out like this to get a glass
of water.”
Her tone grew more pitiful.
“It was late, and I thought Celeste must already be asleep. That’s why I didn’t bother to grab a robe. I didn’t expect to run into her like this.”
“The moment she saw me… she started yelling. She called me shameless and said a woman like me, so indecent, didn’t deserve to be with you.”
With just a few words, Isolde painted Celeste as a deranged, jealous girl–someone who lurked outside her uncle’s door at night, listening to things she shouldn’t, only to lash out in
envy.
“She’s lying!”
Celeste’s voice trembled, her eyes rimmed with red.
“I didn’t say any of that. She… she provoked me on purpose. She brought up my parents and called my mom a lunatic!”
Memories from school rushed back, hitting Celeste like a tidal wave.
As a child, she had been bullied mercilessly because of her mother’s past.
Her classmates would corner her, taunting her as “the little psycho born from a crazy woman,” throwing garbage at her while laughing cruelly.
It had been Damien who put an end to it back then.

Surely, he would remember that.
Surely, he would know she wasn’t lying about something that had scarred her so deeply.
“What are you talking about?”
Isolde feigned innocence, her wide eyes full of confusion.
“Your parents? Celeste, I don’t know anything about them. All I know is that they passed
Away
Away when you were little. That’s it.”
Damien murmured something soothing to Isolde before turning to Celeste, his eyes cold and filled with disappointment..
“Celeste,” he said, his voice sharp, “I never thought you’d stoop so low as to fabricate something like this just to slander her”
“Isolde doesn’t know anything about your parents. I never told her about your past.”
“And she couldn’t have looked it up
herself?”
Celeste shot back, her voice breaking.
“It’s not exactly a secret-”
“That’s enough!”
Damien’s harsh tone cut her off.
“Do you think everyone is as conniving as you? Twisting truths and stirring up trouble?”
Celeste froze, her chest tightening painfully.
Conniving?
Stirring up trouble?
Wa’s that truly how Damien saw her?
In that moment, she realized that no explanation would matter.

“Apologize to her. Now,” Damien ordered, his tone icy,
Celeste bit her lip so hard it nearly bled, refusing to speak.
She wasn’t in the wrong.
Isolde was the one who owed her an apology,
“I’ve spoiled you for too long,” Damien said, his voice colder than ever.
“But not this time. From now on, you’re confined to your room. You’re not to step out until you’ve reflected on your actions and are ready to apologize.”
All her life, Celeste had been the one Damien protected. But now, he was defending
someone else.
She returned to her room as instructed, curling into a tight ball on her bed.
Even beneath the blankets, she couldn’t shake the cold that seeped into her bones.
Her phone buzzed, the sudden vibration cutting through the silence.
It was a message from the cryonics team.

Her heart clenched.
December was so close.
She stared at the screen for a long time before typing her response with trembling fingers.
December 12th.

Her birthday.
The same day Damien would marry Isolde.
She wouldn’t be attending the wedding.
Damien was already sick of her presence.
She’d only ruin their day.
It was better this way–leaving quietly, without di
