Chapter 15
Damien finished reading, the last line blurring as a tear silently fell onto the page.
He blinked and realized his face was wet–he’d been crying without even noticing.
“Happiness… free of regret.”
A broken laugh escaped him, followed by sobs that wracked his entire body.
“Celeste, how can I be happy when you’re gone?” he whispered, clutching the letter to his
chest.
Her words rang in his ears, stabbing at his heart.
She had asked for so little–just a moment of his time, a slice of cake, and a simple birthday
wish. Yet he hadn’t even been able to give her that.
His memories flashed back to her pleading with him before his wedding:
“Uncle Damien, just one last birthday. That’s all I ask. Please, just one last time.”
Her voice echoed, haunting him.
The guilt was unbearable, tearing through him like a relentless storm.
The facility director’s voice broke through his despair.
“Mr. Sterling, I understand this must be difficult, but please remember: Miss Monroe isn’t gone forever. Cryonics freezes a person instantly, preserving them without harm.”
“Her life signs are intact. She’s simply suspended in time–frozen on December 12th.”
December 12th.
Her birthday.
The same day he had thrown a lavish wedding for Isolde.

The same day he had broken his promise to her.
Damien’s mind raced as the director continued.
“While we don’t yet have the technology to safely unfreeze her, advancements are being made every year. One day, it will be possible. By then, cancer may even be curable.”
The director’s words lit a spark of hope in Damien’s chest.
Aintreeze her?” he repeated, his voice trembling.
“Yes,” the director nodded.
“When the time comes, she can be revived and healed.”
Damien grabbed the director by the shoulders, his voice raw with desperation.
“Do it now. Unfreeze her now! I need to see her–I need to see her!”
