“MCr. Sterling, you’re not serious, are you?”
The head of the Cryonics Research Facility stared at Damien in disbelief,,
“You want us to freeze you?”
Damien nodded calmly.
“That’s correct. As of today, I am the primary shareholder of this facility, Ten percent of Sterling Corporation’s annual revenue will now be allocated to your research.”
“Use it to advance your work on developing a safe thawing process.”
Ten percent might not sound like much, but for Sterling Corporation, it was monumental.
The company’s monthly net income alone was in the billions.
The head researcher hesitated.
“Mr. Sterling, we’re deeply grateful for your generous support. But cryonics was designed for patients with terminal illnesses–those suffering from ALS, cancer, or multi–organ failure–conditions for which current medical science offers no cure.”
He paused before continuing, carefully choosing his words.
“These patients hope to buy time. After saying goodbye to their loved ones, they choose to be frozen, hoping that future medical advancements will provide a cure.”
“But you’re perfectly healthy, sir. I can’t understand why you would make this choice.”
Damien turned, his eyes fixed on the room where Celeste’s cryonic chamber lay.
A soft, melancholic smile crossed his face.
“When she wakes up,” he said, his voice tinged with tenderness, “I want to be the first person she sees. I don’t want her to feel alone–not even for a moment. I won’t let that happen again.”

The head researcher fell silent, overwhelmed by Damien’s invevering, resched
“Mr Sterling,” he began cautiously, “I understand your devotion to Ms. Whitaker, it’s admirable, truly. But love isn’t everything. Life is so much more?
“I feel compelled to remind you when you enter eryonte suspension, your time stops, batt the world keeps turning. Your family, your friends… their lives will move on.
“Years from now, when you awaken, they may no longer be here. While terminal patients Rave no choice but to hope for the future, you’re different, You’re healthy”
“You could live a full, happy life in the present, surrounded by those who love you. Are you truly willing to give all that up for love?”
Damien’s response was immediate, his eyes burning with conviction.
“Yes, I’ve already made my decision.”
He knew what the researcher said was true,
he world he would awaken to would be alien, unfamiliar.
But that was all the more reason to freeze himself.
Celeste had once said he was her only connection to the world,
If that was true, how could he leave her to navigate the vast unknown alone?
If she was to sleep through the centuries, then so would he.
