CHAPTER 039
AVA’S POV
My heart stuttered in my chest, and my mind went completely blank.
I hadn’t told anyone about the pregnancy except Sally of course who found out because of the car accident I had.
1 opened my mouth to say something, anything, but nothing came out. I couldn’t even manage a simple response. The weight of his question hung heavy in the air, suffocating me.
Alex was the last person I imagined to find out. How did he know?
More importantly, he should not know about my marriage with Jason.
We returned to the table together and with each step I took could feel my heart beating faster in my chest.
My hands trembled as I reached for the glass of water on the table, but my fingers wouldn’t cooperate. Everything inside me was frozen.
My throat tightened, and I thought I might choke on the words I needed to say. The ones I couldn’t seen to form. “I know you are married to Jason,” he continued his voice like a bomb exploding all my secrets.
I blinked, my heart racing. I hadn’t told him about my marriage. I hadn’t even mentioned Jason’s name in the time we’d spent together while working on his jewelry launch.
No one except Sally knew about my relationship with Jason So how could he have known?
My head ached badly as though someone was hammering inside my skull, as I tried to figure it all out.
“Alex,” I finally whispered, my voice barely audible. I didn’t know if I was asking him to take it all back, or if I was pleading for him to say something else -anything else
“How do you know?”
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he sat there, his eyes studying me as if he could see straight through me. The air between us felt thick with unspoken words.
“I did some digging,” he replied, his voice low.
Digging? Why?
“You were investigating me?” I asked, my voice a mix of confusión and disbelief. “What do you want from me?” Alex’s gaze softened. “I wasn’t investigating you. I was investigating Laura.”
The name hit me like a slap in the face. Laura. Of course, it was about her. Nothing ever seemed to happen without her getting involved.
I tried to process what Alex was saying. He was investigating Laura, and somehow, that led him to discover my marriage to Jason
It didn’t make sense, but before I could speak, the pain in my stomach hit me like a wave crashing against a rock.
I gasped, clutching my abdomen as the sharp ache spread through my body. It was like nothing I had ever felt before. The nausea returned, worse this time, and my vision blurred.
“Ava?” Alex’s voice broke through the fog of pain, but it felt distant, muffled. “What’s happening?”

CHAPTER 039
I couldn’t answer. My knees buckled, and I crumpled to the floor. My head spun, and the world around me spun
faster.
The next thing I knew, everything went black.
When I opened my eyes, the sterile white walls of the hospital room greeted me. My head was pounding, and my stomach still ached, but the pain was more bearable now.
The first thing I saw was Alex, sitting by my bedside, his expression tight with worry.
“Ava,” he said softly, his voice full of concern. “How are you feeling?”
I didn’t answer right away. I wasn’t sure if I was okay. I wasn’t sure of anything anymore.
The first thought that came to mind was Jason. Did he know? Knowing Jason was my husband now had Alex called him?
My heart beat faster at the thought of him finding out about the baby.
I didn’t know what came over me. I quickly grabbed his arms with my trembling hands, my eyes wide with panic. Did you… Did you tell Jason?” I whispered, my heart racing in my chest.
Alex’s face softened. “No. I didn’t tell him.”
I let out a shaky breath, feeling the weight lift off my chest. The last thing I wanted was for Jason to find out about the baby, not like this, not through Alex.
I couldn’t trust him. Not when he’d always put Laura first and had betrayed my trust yet again.
But as much as I was relieved, there was still so much I needed to understand. Why had Alex been investigating Laura?
I sat up slowly, feeling a bit lightheaded, but I ignored it. I needed answers.
“Alex,” I said, my voice still weak but firm. “Why were you looking into Laura?”
For a moment, Alex didn’t say anything. He just stared at me, his jaw tight. I could see the hesitation in his eyes. He didn’t want to tell me.
“I can’t say,” he murmured, almost as if he was trying to protect me.
But I needed to know. I needed to know every single thing about the woman causing chaos in my marriage.
“She’s the one making my marriage miserable,” I said, my voice rising with frustration. “She’s the reason Jason doesn’t even know about my pregnancy. I can’t even look at him without thinking of her. She’s everywhere.”
“Please Alex, I need to know,” I begged.
Alex didn’t answer immediately. He just stared at me, his face hardening with emotion. I knew he was holding something back, something important, but I didn’t care. I needed to hear the truth, no matter how ugly it was.

coma,” he finally said, his voice cold. “She’s the reason he’s lying in that bed, in a vegetative state.”
I froze. My blood ran cold as I tried to process his words. Laura? Responsible for her ex–husband being in a coma? “What do you mean?” I whispered, my heart pounding.
Alex’s eyes darkened. “She’s a murderer,” he said, his voice cold. “She’s the one responsible for the accident that put him there.”
