CHAPTER 046
AVA’S POV
I was deep in thought reflecting on what my plan would be next and how I was going to raise my unborn child alone once Jason signed the divorce paper when the phone in my hand buzzed, the sharp vibration sending a jolt through me.
I glanced at it, and Jason’s name flashed on the screen and my stomach churned and chest tightened.
Why was he calling me?
I hesitated for a moment but then it crossed my mind that maybe he was calling to let me know that he had already signed the divorce papers. The thought of it sent a sharp ache through my chest.
The moment I answered, his voice came through shaky and raw. And I knew immediately something was wrong.
“Grandpa’s been rushed to the hospital,” he said, his words tumbling over one another.
“What happened?” I asked, gripping the phone tightly, my heart racing.
“They’re not sure yet,” he replied. “Ava, please I really need you… here.”
Without hesitation, I grabbed my bag and was about to rush out of the house, when Sally stopped me.
“Where are you off to?” She asked, staring at me. “I heard Grandpa Campbell fainted at the company and was rushed to the hospital. Is that where you are headed?”
I could see the worry flickering in her eyes. “Yes Sal, Jason just called. I’ll update you when I get there.”
“Drive carefully,” she shouted, as I rushed out of the house.
My mind was spinning with worry as I drove to the hospital I wasn’t going because of Jason but for Grandpa who had treated me like his own daughter ever since I married Jason.
And it would shatter my heart if anything happened to him.
By the time I reached the hospital, Jason was pacing in the waiting room, his usually composed demeanor shattered. His hands were clenched into fists, and his forehead was covered with sweat.
“Jason,” I called softly, walking up to him.
He turned, his face was pale, his eyes empty yet filled with sadness. I knew how much he loved Grandpa and how close they were, even more than with his father. So I knew how much hurt he was going through at that moment. “He’s in there,” he said, nodding toward the closed double doors at the end of the hallway.
Despite the pain he had caused me, I placed a comforting hand on his arm, trying to steady his trembling form.” The doctors will do everything they can. Grandpa’s strong.
Jason nodded, but his jaw tightened.
As we sat in uneasy silence, my phone buzzed again. This time, it was Sally.
“Hey, Ava,” she began, her voice low. “I heard something, and I thought you should know.”
“What is it?” I asked, stepping away from Jason to take the call.
“In the company’s anonymous group chat, someone mentioned Laura was the last person to meet with Grandpa before he… you know.” Sally hesitated, her words heavy with implication,

cold wave swept through me. My hand instinctively tightened around the phone. “Are you sure?”
That’s what I heard,” Sally replied, “And I’m sure… It’s the truth. Laura isn’t exactly known for playing fair.”
I ended the call and stared at the floor, my head in a mess.
Laura? But what could she have done? And why?
She knew Grandpa didn’t like her, was that why she played her dirty games and landed him in the hospital?
Jason’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts. “Ava, the doctor’s here.”
I hurried back to his side as the doctor approached. The man’s expression was neutral, though the lines of exhaustion around his eyes revealed that he’d likely been working for long hours.
“Mr. Campbell is stable,” the doctor began, glancing between Jason and me. “However, he’s still unconscious and we can’t really determine when he’s going to wake up. But for now, there’s no immediate cause for alarm.”
Relief flooded through me, and I saw Jason let out a deep breath, his shoulders fell.
“Thank you, Doctor,” Jason said, his voice filled with gratitude.
As the doctor walked away, I turned to Jason. “You should stay here with him. I’ll head to the office and make sure everything’s running smoothly. The staff will be worried about Grandpa, and we need to keep things calm.”
Jason nodded. “Call me if anything comes up.”
I gave his hand a reassuring squeeze before leaving the hospital. I hadn’t forgiven him yet and was still going to carry on with the divorce but for now, I had to let go of my anger till Grandpa recovers.
As I drove to the office, Sally’s words played in my mind. Laura. What role did she have in this?
The atmosphere at the office was tense but controlled as I arrived. Employees whispered in hushed tones, and their worried glances followed me as I walked through the Hallways.
I gathered everyone in the conference room, offering them updates on Grandpa’s condition. “He’s stable now,” I said, keeping my tone firm yet comforting. “So let’s focus on our work and ensure the company runs smoothly.” There were murmurs of relief, and I noticed some tension easing from their faces. All except one. Laura.
She stood near the back of the room, her expression calm too calm.
Once the meeting ended, I waited for the others to leave before walking up to her. “Laura, a word,” I said, my tone. leaving no room for argument.
She raised an eyebrow, I thought she was going to object but to my surprise, she followed behind me.
We walked into a small, empty office. I closed the door behind us and turned to face her. “You were the last person to see Grandpa before he collapsed.”
Laura leaned against the desk, folding her arms. “And?”
She didn’t even deny it, I looked into her eyes and there was no guilt or fear it was just blank.
My mind wandered to what Alex had told me about Laura and her ex–husband. How she had set up a car accident to kill him just to get what she wanted but had resulted in him being in a vegetative state.
Could she have done that to Grandpa just to clear her path to Jason? Since Grandpa seems to be the only one in the Campbell family who is against her? The thought alone made my insides boil,

I clenched my fists, the image of Grandpa lying unconscious flashed in my mind. “Don’t play games with me,” I snapped, my voice sharper this time. “What did you say to him?”
Her expression remained the same. “I didn’t say anything inappropriate if that’s what you’re implying”
I took a step closer, refusing to let her dismiss me so easily. “I don’t believe you. If you upset him, if you caused this…”
Laura interrupted with a laugh. “Oh, Ava, your paranoia is showing. Do you really think I have that kind of power?”
“You have a way of getting under people’s skin,” I shot back. “I won’t let you hurt him….”
Her smile turned into a smirk, and she straightened, stepping closer to me. “And what exactly would you do, Ava, if I did?”
I met her gaze head–on refusing to back down. “You don’t want to find out, Laura. Stay away from Grandpa if you hurt him, I’ll make sure you regret it.
