CHAPTER 048
AVA’S POV
My breath caught at the coldness in Jason’s voice. It was like the roar of a lion as I entered the room and I wondered who he was talking to.
He turned to face me and our eyes locked. His widened slightly and I knew he hadn’t expected it to be me who walked in.
“Who are you talking to?” I asked, holding his gaze.
“I didn’t know you’d be back.” He said, changing the topic. Something was off about his tone but I didn’t bother pressing on the matter.
I reminded myself that his business was no longer my concern as we’d be divorced soon anyway. I thought about asking him if he had signed the divorce papers, but I held my tongue.
Grandpa still lay there unconscious so I decided to wait until he fully recovered.
If it were any other member of Jason’s family lying in that bed, I wouldn’t even bother showing up, let alone wait ⚫ until they wake up before proceeding with the divorce.
Jason’s mouth opened slightly like he was about to say something but I ignored him and sat by Grandpa’s bedside, my fingers tracing the edge of the blanket draped over him. His face was pale, his breathing even but shallow.
The sight of him like this shattered me. “You’re going to be fine,” I whispered, even though he couldn’t hear me.
“You should go home and shower,” I said, without looking at Jason.
He hesitated, clearly wanting to stay, but I insisted he go home to rest. He looked exhausted, though I doubted either of us would sleep much tonight.
It’s funny how I still care about him, no matter how many times he had made me cry, how many times he had chosen Laura over me and I blamed it on love. Although I’ve decided to leave Jason, I still have feelings for him.
You can’t blame me. He’s the only man I’ve ever loved, and can’t just kill those feelings so easily.
As the hours passed, I stayed by Grandpa’s side, listening to the quiet hum of the machines and I didn’t know when I drifted off to sleep.
When morning came, I stirred in the chair, my back aching from the uncomfortable position. A faint rustling sound caught my attention. I looked up and saw Grandpa’s eyelids opening slowly.
“Grandpa?” I leaned forward, gripping his hand tightly.
He blinked a few times, his eyes slowly focusing on me. “Ava,” he said, his voice weak but clear.
A sob escaped my throat, and I covered my mouth, as tears streamed down my face. I let out a sigh of relief.” You’re awake. Thank God, you’re awake.”
He gave me a weak smile. “You’re crying? That’s not like you, my girl.”
I let out a shaky laugh, using the back of my hands to wipe my eyes. “Don’t scare me like that again, okay?”
He patted my hand gently, his touch light but reassuring. “It’s nothing to worry about. I’m fine.”
I shook my head, my grip on his hand tightening. “It’s not nothing, Grandpa. You had a heart attack and collapsed. Do you know how terrified we were?”

He sighed, his eyes softened. “I didn’t mean to worry you, Ava. I’ll be more careful, I promise.”
I quickly called Jason, my hands trembling as I dialed his number. He answered on the second ring. “Ava?” His voice was sleepy but laced with concern.
“Grandpa is awake,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm even though I felt overwhelmed with emotions.
“I’m on my way,” he said without hesitation, hanging up before I could respond.
Jason arrived at the hospital within half an hour, his face a mixture of relief and exhaustion. He went straight to Grandpa’s bedside, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“Grandpa, you scared us,” Jason said, his voice low but filled with emotion.
Grandpa chuckled weakly. “What’s all the fuss about? I’m not going anywhere yet. Besides, I still haven’t carried my grandchildren.”
A pang of guilt filled me. “I’m carrying your grandchild in my belly, Grandpa,” I said inwardly.
Jason was the cause of this. His indecisive nature when it came to Laura was the reason I couldn’t tell Grandpa about my pregnancy.
Jason and I would soon be divorced, and if he found out I was pregnant, he might want to take custody of the child when he or she was born.
With Campbell’s wealth and influence, I knew I would lose to them, even if I decided to sue.
So, I couldn’t take the risk of letting Grandpa know because once he knew, Jason would know too.
Grandpa’s gaze shifted between Jason and me, his expression grew serious.
“I need to ask you both something,” he said, his voice firm despite his weak state.
Jason and I exchanged a glance, unsure of what was coming
“Are the two of you getting a divorce?”
