Chapter 190
That evening, Zeke had gone to the cinema to watch a movie. Alone. He had never been a movie fanatic, but whenever he did go to the cinema, it was always with someone, usually his sister.
But he hadn’t spoken to Luisa since he left Thalassa’s office yesterday. Nor had he spoken to Thalassa. The thought of Thalassa made his heart ache painfully.
He wasn’t upset with Luisa, just disappointed. Her telling him some time ago that she wasn’t going to choose him over Kris as the one who deserved to be with Thalassa had hurt enough. But the fact that she hadn’t bothered to tell him Thalassa had gotten back with Kris felt even worse.
If he had known, he would’ve been better prepared before going to see Thalassa at the office. Instead, he’d walked in on Thalassa and Kris kissing–a scene that shattered him
As for Thalassa, he wasn’t upset with her either. How could he be? It wasn’t her fault he’d been too much of a coward to tell her about his feelings all these years.
But that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt.
And now, here he was, sitting among strangers at the cinema, watching some romantic comedy, which wasn’t the best idea given the state of his emotions. He felt so fucking alone.
Letting out a long–suffering sigh that earned him a glare from the woman sitting next to him, Zeke tried to focus
on the movie.
It was supposed to be a comedy, but he hadn’t laughed or chuckled even once. He was bored to tears–until a new character appeared on the screen. She looked so much like Millie.
Millie.
Zeke’s chest tightened at the thought of her. Ever since the day he saw the bruises on her body and confronted her boyfriend, only for Millie to ‘confess‘ that she was into BDSM, she had been avoiding him. So much so, it was as if he were COVID itself.
Every time she came to hang out with Thalassa and Luisa at their house, and he happened to be there, she would always find an excuse to leave. When he tried to talk to her, she would brush him off and go.
It was strange, but he realized that he missed her. He understood she was still upset with him for making her expose her secret in public, but how long was she going to keep putting distance between them?
He glanced at his watch: 7:14 PM. Not late. Getting up, he walked out of the cinema. Once outside, he pulled out his phone and opened his contacts. Scrolling, his thumb hovered over her name for a few seconds before he finally dialed her number.
It rang until it went to voicemail. He should’ve probably stopped then, but he dialed again. Finally, she picked up.
“Zeke…” her voice was low, almost a whisper.
“Millie, thank you for picking up.”
“You shouldn’t be calling me at this time, Zeke.”
Zeke frowned. “I’m sorry. I didn’t think it was late. I just wanted to know how you were doing.”
“I’m fine.”
Silence.
Chapter 190
Zeke sighed. “Millie, I really hate that you’re upset with me.”
“I’m not upset with you, Zeke.”
Zeke blinked. “You’re not? Then why have you been avoiding me so much?”
“I haven’t.”
“Yes, you have,” Zeke insisted. “You find an excuse to leave every time we see each other. You barely say hi. It really bothers me.”
A bit of silence followed before she asked, “Why does it bother you so much, Zeke?”
Zeke paused. Why did it bother him so much? He settled on the first answer that came to mind.
“Well, because I care about you, Millie,” he said quietly. “Don’t you care about me?”
He held his breath, waiting for her answer. Finally, it came.
“Yes. I… care about you too.”
“Who the hell are you talking to?” A voice suddenly bellowed in the background.
Zeke immediately recognized it as Millie’s boyfriend.
“You fucking slut, you’re cheating on me!”
“Francis, no! It’s not what you think. Please, calm down.”
Millie shrieked, and suddenly, there was a crashing sound.
“You slut, you’re going to regret this!”
Then the line went dead.
Zeke’s heart began thumping furiously in his chest. The realization hit him hard. He’d been right. Millie’s boyfriend was a scumbag who abused her.
