Lola only stayed in the Reed residence for a few minutes before leaving.
After seeing Lola off, Doris returned home and saw Jimmy sitting in the living room.
She turned around, intending to help her sister, Laura, clean up in the kitchen.
“Doris, come here,” Jimmy called out.
Doris had no choice but to stop and walk to the living room, standing in front of Jimmy. “Dad, what is it?”
“I was wondering–what does your friend’s family do for a living?” Jimmy asked.
Doris immediately became wary. “What are you trying to do?”
She had no idea what scheme her father was planning now.
“I noticed she wears designer brands and drives a sports car. She must be pretty rich, right?” Jimmy’s smile said it all.
“Dad, don’t even think about it.” Doris crushed his delusions straight away.
“Doris, have you ever thought about why your mother got sick?” Jimmy picked up his teacup and took a sip.
Doris looked at Jimmy, waiting for him to continue.
“It’s because of you, an unfilial daughter, constantly making her worry. Stress damages health–that’s why she got sick.”
“I never made Mom worry,” Doris protested.

“Breaking up with Ryan, marrying a complete stranger without permission, owing Ryan one million dollars and not paying him back… Every single one of these is your fault. And you still say you haven’t made your mother worry?
“If it weren’t for you upsetting her, would she have fallen ill? This is all on you.” Jimmy accused her, pinning all the blame on
Doris.
Laura had just finished cleaning up and overheard the conversation. She felt that Jimmy was being too unfair.
“Dad, you can’t blame Doris for this,” Laura spoke up for her sister.
“Shut up,” Jimmy snapped angrily. “None of you are any good. Laura, you married into the Webb family, but you’re completely useless. You can’t even win over your husband’s heart or get any money from him. If you were capable, your mother and I wouldn’t be in this mess.”
“If you have an issue, take it up with me–why drag my sister into this?” Doris defended Laura.
“Doris, the deadline for the one million dollars you owe Ryan is coming up. Since your friend is rich, go borrow it from her, or ask her for it–I don’t care how. Just pay it back and stop making your mother worry.”
Jimmy tried to speak to Doris calmly. “Return the money, and once she feels at ease, her mood will improve. If I persuade her again, she might agree to the surgery. If you don’t want her to get better, just pretend I never said anything.”
Doris furrowed her brows and pressed her lips together in silence, while Laura held her hand, her eyes filled with worry.
Leaving the Reed residence, Doris returned to Greenlake Hill.

Chapter 81
She had just finished cooking when Lewis came home.
“You’re back. Wash your hands first,” Doris said, untying the apron from her waist.
Lewis took off his suit jacket, walked over to wash his hands, and dried them.
Doris had already served the food.
As Lewis sat down across from her, he noticed a necklace around Doris’s slender neck.
He had never seen this necklace before. It was heart–shaped. He thought it was tacky.
Lewis scooped up some soup and casually remarked, “Nice necklace.”
“Really? I think it’s pretty too. I really like it.” Doris instinctively reached up to touch the heart–shaped pendant at her neck, her eyes curving into a smile,
Lewis looked up, his eyes deep. “You like it that much?”
“Of course,” Doris said cheerfully, as it was a gift that Lola had given her.
Lewis set his soup bowl down on the table. “Then why don’t I see you wearing the earrings I gave you? You don’t like them?”
His gaze landed on her empty earlobes, turning icy.
“Lola said the earrings you gave me are no ordinary pieces.” Doris met his eyes. “I was afraid of losing them.”
Lewis curled his lips slightly, thinking it was an excuse.
“Are those earrings really that expensive? How much did they cost?” Doris cautiously probed.
Lewis’s expression turned serious. “Over a million.”
Doris’s pupils dilated, the corners of her lips twitching as she stared at him in shock, too stunned to speak.
Watching her reaction, Lewis slowly sipped his soup, enjoying the moment.
“Really?” Doris asked again, unwilling to give up.
“Just kidding,” Lewis said, picking up his food. “Let’s focus on our meals.”
Doris picked up her food too. “So you didn’t mean it?”
Given his status and job, she thought buying million–dollar earrings made no sense. But the way he looked just now didn’t seem like he was joking.
For a moment, she couldn’t tell if he was kidding.
“Who gave you the necklace?” he suddenly asked.
“Can’t I buy it myself?” Doris pouted slightly in protest.
“A Tiffany necklace like that costs at least 3 thousand dollars. Would you really spend that much?” Lewis clearly didn’t believe her.
Doris rarely wore jewelry, didn’t wear much makeup, and always looked simple and clean–but her beauty stood out.
Doris found herself unable to argue. “It was a gift.”

“From who?” asked Lewis.
“A friend,” answered Doris.
“A man?”
Annoyed, Doris raised a brow and asked back, “Is that not allowed?
Lewis’s expression remained neutral, but his eyes narrowed. “Doris, don’t forget we’re still married And yet, you dare accept another man’s gift?
“Are you planning ahead, making sure you have a backup for when we divorce? You sure know how to plan for yourself. Have you forgotten what I told you before?”
“That as long as we’re married, I can’t do anything improper to cuckold you” Doris repeated word for word. “And I haven’t
Lewis reached out his palm, opening it in front of Doris. “If you really haven’t, then take off the necklace?
Doris instinctively leaned back against her chair. “No way.”
But before she could react, Lewis had already gotten up slightly and grabbed the necklace around her neck. With a small tug, the delicate chain snapped.
Doris felt the emptiness around her neck and exclaimed, “Lewis, what are you doing? Give me back my necklace?
Lewis ignored her and walked toward the balcony.
Doris quickly followed, only to see him stretch his hand out over the railing. Without hesitation, he loosened his grip, letting the necklace drop straight down.
Doris stood frozen, her feet rooted to the ground, watching helplessly as the necklace disappeared. She never expected Lewis to go crazy enough to snatch her necklace and throw it off the balcony.
Lewis turned around, his face still expressionless, and walked past her. As he brushed by, Doris finally snapped out of it and grabbed his arm.
“Lewis, what the hell is wrong with you?” Doris glared at him, furious.
“Heartbroken over a necklace another man gave you?” Lewis’s eyes remained calm. “If you cared so much, you shouldn’t have accepted it in the first place.”
“You bastard.” Doris raised her fist and punched his shoulder.
Lewis caught her wrist in one swift motion. “Doris, you were the one who broke the rules first, so don’t blame me for being ruthless.
“Remember, my tolerance has limits. And my bottom line is not to be crossed. Don’t ever let me see something like this again. You know my temper. Don’t bring trouble upon yourself–it won’t be worth it.”
