After washing the apples, Karry and I
returned to the ward. After a short while,
we prepared to leave.
As we exited the hospital, Celia
spoke, “Karry, Emily, it’s almost dinner
time. Let’s go eat together!”
Karry readily agreed. Perhaps to
prevent me from throwing a tantrum and
making Celia uncomfortable, he agreed
for me before I could even open my
mouth.
At the restaurant, we were led to a
private room. Karry naturally took the
menu and ordered. Only when the dishes
arrived did I realize he’d only ordered
Celia’s favorites.

This, I thought, was the difference
between love and indifference. I’d once
made him memorize my preferences, but it was different. Everything he had done.
for me wasn’t out of love, it was because I‘
d forced him.
I wasn’t surprised; I’d anticipated this.
I ate slowly, saying nothing.
Midway through the meal, a frantic
phone call interrupted the silence. Karry
stepped out to answer it. The next second,
I looked up and froze
there was a
necklace around Celia’s neck.
“How did you get that necklace?”
Celia glanced down and smiled.“Oh,
you mean this one? I said it was pretty,
and Karry gave it to me.”

My face fell. That necklace… I sent it
to Karry on our anniversary. It was
engraved on the inside: Emily loves Karry.
I’d poured my heart into it, and he’d
casually given it to Celia!
A surge of anger flared within me.
But then, the novel’s plot resurfaced in
my mind. Karry had always loved Celia;
he’d never valued my gifts. If I made a
fuss, it would only push him further away.
A wave of icy calm washed over me. I
composed myself, offering a faint smile.”
Well, it does suit you.”
Celia had expected a confrontation,
so my calm response really surprised her.
She gritted her teeth, standing up abruptly
with a bowl of soup.

“Emily, this seafood soup is delicious;
try some.”
She knew I was allergic to shellfish. I
was about to refuse, but she didn’t give me
the chance. With a swift movement, she
smashed the bowl on the floor.
Her eyes welled up, like Cinderella
being bullied by her stepmother.
Before I could react, Karry rushed to
Celia’s side, shielding her. His gaze, as
cold as glacial ice, fell upon me.
“Emily Kane, what did you do?!”
Celia, with tear–filled eyes, added
fuel to the fire.“Karry, it’s my fault. I
angered Emily, or she wouldn’t have
splashed the soup at me. I’m just a little

burned. It’s okay, don’t blame her…”
“I didn’t!” I protested, my eyes wide.
Karry ignored me, giving me a cold. look.“You’re unbelievable.” He grabbed Celia’s hand and stormed out, leaving me
there alone.
Watching his back and Celia’s
triumphant glare, I felt my heart sank.
Over the next few days, Celia kept
framing me like this. She claimed I’d cost
her a job, orchestrated a industry–wide blacklist against her, and even sent people
to vandalize her home.
Karry kept swallowing his anger until
one day he just couldn’t anymore. At
home, he confronted me, his voice tight

with anger.“Emily, if you have a problem,
take it out on me. Why are you targeting
Celia?”
For six years, Karry had been cold
towards me. This was the first time I’d
seen him so emotional, and it was for
protecting Celia.
“I didn’t! I didn’t do any of that!”
My pleas fell on deaf ears. He didn’t
trust me.
“Who else could it be?! You’ve forced
me into this with your money. I bet there’s
nothing you wouldn’t do.”
“Stop it. I’ve given you everything.
Can’t you just leave the people around me
alone?!”

guest room. Once again, he left me alone
with my despair.
His distrust left me wound that
wouldn’t heal. But beyond the hurt, a
deeper fear gnawed at me. I only had a
few days left. At this rate, I might be
killed by him before my fake death.
I was too desperate that I lay awake
all night. Finally, a plan formed. That
evening, I drove to Celia’s apartment.
“Celia, let’s make peace. From now
on, I’m going to help you get together with Karry!”
