Chapter 111
Chapter 111
Doris stared out the window. “No.”
“Doris, we’re married,” Lewis said, glancing at Doris, who hadn’t looked at him since getting in the car.
He thought a kiss was perfectly normal for a couple.
Doris closed her eyes helplessly, her mind filled with the memory of that lingering kiss. Her ears began to heat up uncontrollably.
She tried to act nonchalant. “Just focus on driving, okay?”
Lewis stopped teasing her and kept his eyes on the road.
Soon, they arrived at His Grace Hospital.
Doris and Lewis got out of the car, with Lewis carrying the thermal lunchbox.
“I’ll take it,” Doris said, reaching for the lunchbox.
“Let’s go.” Lewis took her hand. “I’ll come in and see Mom.”
Doris wanted to pull away but gave up at the last second. She didn’t know why she gave up. They went upstairs to Peyton’s ward.
Peyton was awake, and Jimmy and Rupert were also there.
Doris pulled her hand from Lewis‘ grip, took the lunchbox from him, and placed it on the bedside table. “Mom, here’s breakfast for you.”
Lewis nodded politely to Peyton.
“Thank you,” Peyton smiled.
Doris turned to Lewis. “You can go to work now. Don’t be late.”
“Alright,” Lewis said to Peyton. “Take care.”
Lewis was about to leave when Rupert stepped in front of him. “Dear Lewis, can I talk to you about something?”
Doris immediately became alert. “Rupert, what do you want?”
Rupert had actually called Lewis “dear.” She thought that couldn’t mean anything good.
Lewis placed a hand on Doris‘ shoulder, calming her, and looked at Rupert. “What is it?”
“Lewis, you got me a job at Hartman Group. Can you get me transferred to the headquarters?” Rupert asked greedily, not satisfied with just working at a branch.
“Rupert, do you even know what you’re capable of? Getting into Hartman Group is already a miracle. Instead of being grateful, you’re complaining about not being at the headquarters? Who do you think you are?” Doris‘ face turned pale with anger, unable to stand Rupert’s insatiable greed. “Take the job or leave it!”
Lewis must have gone through a lot to get Rupert into Hartman Group. These were all troubles she had brought upon him. He had already gone above and beyond. She couldn’t let Rupert push his luck and create more problems for Lewis.
“Working at the headquarters would make you proud of me. I’ll work hard and won’t cause any trouble for you,” Rupert said

humbly, not arguing back.
“Doris, your brother is being so sincere. Shouldn’t you, as his sister, support him?” Jimmy, though less arrogant than before, still defended his son. “Help him out.”
“He’s already helped as much as he can. Don’t be ungrateful, Doris insisted. She wasn’t going to believe Rupert had changed overnight.
She thought that would take time to prove, not just a few words.
Rupert looked at Lewis, who hadn’t had a chance to speak. “Lewis, can you help me out?”
“Yeah, Doris‘ brother is your family too. We’re all family,” Jimmy said, showing that he had accepted Lewis as family.
Jimmy and Rupert were shrewd and wouldn’t do anything that didn’t benefit them.
Lewis getting Rupert into Hartman Group was no small feat.
Jimmy had a classmate’s son, a neighbor’s son, and a friend’s daughter, all highly educated, who had applied to Hartman Group. Some were eliminated in the first round, while others were sent to branches in other cities for training.
Even staying at the local branch required hard work to get promoted, and only then could they aim for the headquarters. Rupert getting into Hartman Group made the Reed family see Lewis‘ potential. They no longer looked down on Lewis and began to change their attitudes.
The Watson Group had been having some issues recently. Ryan was completely overwhelmed and couldn’t pay any attention to them, so there was no hope left over there.
Doris couldn’t stand it anymore. She gently nudged Lewis. “You go to work. I’ll handle this here.”
Lewis spoke slowly, “It’s not impossible to get into the headquarters.”
Doris tugged at his sleeve and whispered, “Are you crazy? Do you know what you’re saying?”
Lewis grabbed her fingers and gave her a reassuring look.
“Rupert, as long as you say you can do it, not only can you enter Hartman Group’s headquarters, but I’ll even give you the CEO’s position.”
Rumor had it that the CEO of Hartman Group studied abroad and gained years of experience overseas before returning to the country.
A community college graduate like him wouldn’t even be qualified to serve coffee there.
“D–dear Lewis, this probably won’t work, right?” Rupert forced an awkward smile.
Doris sneered, “What? Weren’t you the one shouting about wanting to join the department? Now that you’re given the chance, you’re backing off? If you don’t have the skills, don’t take on the task.”
“Lewis, what about other positions?” Rupert asked bravely.
Lewis‘ expression turned cold. “Do you think Hartman Group is mine? Do you think picking a position is child’s play?”
“A position in the Maintenance Department at a subsidiary in exchange for one million dollars… that doesn’t seem like a good deal.” Jimmy, seeing the negotiation falling through, showed his true colors again.
“Even if we didn’t find a job for Rupert, this one million dollars has nothing to do with Doris.” Lewis‘ eyes grew sharper. “This deal was only considered out of respect for Doris. Since you think it’s a bad deal, I’ll inform HR to cancel your job offer. You

can find another opportunity.”
As Lewis spoke, he pulled out his phone from his suit pocket. Jimmy and Rupert panicked
“Lewis, no.” Rupert had no choice but to give in. “I’ll take it.”
Lewis didn’t put his phone away, his deep eyes fixed on Rupert. “Are you sure? No changes?
“I’m sure. No changes.” Rupert confirmed.
“Good,” Lewis finally warned him, “If you don’t perform well at the subsidiary and fail the evaluation, no one can save you. If you cause trouble and get fired, it’ll be hard for you to find work in Hampstone. No company will hire someone fired from Hartman Group. Understand?”
Rupert shivered under Lewis‘ stern gaze. “I… I understand,” he couldn’t argue back.
Jimmy also swallowed hard, not daring to say a word. After all, Lewis could cancel Rupert’s job offer at any moment.
Hartman Group was a dream for many, and having his son join the subsidiary was a source of pride for Jimmy.
“Today is your onboarding day. If you miss it, the offer is automatically canceled.” Lewis glanced at the time. “You have forty minutes left.”
“Right, I’ll go now.” Rupert’s face changed, and he grabbed his black backpack from the chair and bolted.
Rupert was completely controlled by Lewis, even Jimmy didn’t dare to speak loudly this time.
Doris lightly raised her eyelashes, looking at Lewis‘ perfect profile. She found him more and more handsome.
“I’m going to work.” Lewis also left.
He headed to the outpatient building to discuss some matters with Danis but ended up seeing something he shouldn’t have.
