Chapter 115
Doris eyes widened in shock, and her brows gradually furrowed.
Lewis recounted how he had seen Matteo at the hospital the previous day. “I also found out that the woman is pregnant.”
Doris let out a cold laugh. “No wonder he hasn’t called my sister or asked about Ari since we took her away.

“His family never liked girls, so it’s normal for them not to care. It’s good that my sister is clear–headed and has no intention of going back.
“Since his mistress is already pregnant, I hope he doesn’t try to fight for Ari during the divorce.
“If Ari stays with them, she won’t be valued and will only be neglected and mistreated.”
“I’ll do my best to gather evidence of his affair and give it to Ivan, so Laura can have the upper hand in the divorce and get custody of Ari.” Lewis was confident in his methods.
“Thank you,” Doris trusted him and smiled.
“Is your thank you just words?” Lewis bent down, his eyes level with hers.
Doris looked at his handsome face so close to hers, his high cheekbones and deep eyes like a galaxy.
She pursed her lips. “What do you want?”
“Anything is fine.” Lewis raised an eyebrow indifferently.
“You said it.” Doris blinked her beautiful eyes twice. “You have to keep your word, or you’re a dog.”
“Fine,” He agreed readily.
As soon as he finished speaking, Doris suddenly kissed his cheek, a quick peck before she flitted away.
“My mom has surgery tomorrow, so I need to rest early. Goodnight, Mr. Hartman.”
Lewis watched as she rushed into her room and quickly closed the door.
The soft touch of her lips still lingered on his cheek.
He raised his hand and rubbed the spot where she had kissed him with his thumb. This time, it was just a kiss on the cheek, not the lips, but it gave him a different feeling.
Doris went to the hospital early the next morning, leaving a note for Lewis.
Laura dropped Arianna off at kindergarten and arrived just in time for Peyton’s surgery.
Jimmy was also there, and Rupert had come in the morning before heading to work.
He had just found a job and couldn’t take time off so soon after starting.
Laura and Doris watched as Peyton was wheeled into the operating room.
They waited outside. The surgery wasn’t complicated, and with Professor Micah leading it, the success rate was very high.
But the waiting time was still agonizing. Doris and Laura couldn’t help but feel nervous and uneasy, silently praying for

Peyton’s safety,
At noon, Lewis called to check in. “Have you eaten?”
“Not yet. Doris had no appetite at the moment.
He knew she wouldn’t care about eating,
“The surgery still has two hours to go. You can’t skip meals.” Lewis calculated the time. “I ordered takeout for you. It should arrive in a few minutes. Make sure to eat when it gets there.”
“I will.” Doris asked, “There are three of us. How many portions did you order?”
“Enough for all three of you.” Lewis had ordered extra.
“Oh.” Doris looked up and saw a delivery guy approaching. “Who’s Doris?”
“Me.” Doris raised her hand and waved. “The food’s here.”
“Then eat well.”
“You, too.”
After ending the call, Doris stepped forward to sign the receipt and took the two large paper bags.
The bags were printed with the logo and name of Riverside Canteen.
Riverside Canteen was a high–end restaurant in Hampstone, and naturally, the prices were steep.
These two heavy bags must have cost Lewis quite a bit.
“Dad, Laura, it’s time for lunch,” Doris carried the bags over. “Lewis ordered this for us.”
“Is it already noon? Lewis is so thoughtful.” Laura, who had been so tense she lost track of time, thought to herself how considerate Lewis was.
After a 4–hour surgery, Peyton’s operation was completed successfully. Now, it was all about recovery.
In the afternoon, Lewis came to the hospital after work to pick up Doris and also visited Peyton.
As the days passed, Peyton recovered well under the care of the caregiver.
Doris took the opportunity to spend more time with Peyton before the opening of Loris Cafe, the dessert shop she co- owned with Lola.

One day, when Laura came to visit Peyton, Doris asked her, “Laura, have you found a job yet?”
Laura shook her head. “Not yet.”
Doris frowned, feeling heartbroken seeing Laura’s lack of progress, “Laura, maybe I should talk to Lewis and see if he can find a suitable job for you.”
“Doris, let’s not trouble Lewis with my job search. He already helped Mom get into the VIP ward, found a caregiver, helped me find an affordable place to live, and even got Rupert into a branch of Hartman Group.
“Our family has already caused him enough trouble. We should be grateful and not burden him further. We need to know when enough is enough, okay?”

Doris didn’t say anything more.
Indeed, their family matters had already dragged Lewis in, and they couldn’t let him get even more involved.

The next day, Laura called Doris, “Doris, I’ve found a job.”
“Really? That’s great! Laura, 1 knew you could do it.” Doris was thrilled by the good news.
“Doris, listen. I found a job as a waitress at a Western restaurant. The working hours mean I can’t pick up Ari in the afternoon. Do you think you could help me with that?”
Doris had hoped to find a 9–to–5 job that would allow her to pick up Arianna.
But unfortunately, no such opportunity had comic up. After learning about Doris‘ idea to ask Lewis for help, Laura had decided to take a job with inconvenient hours but one that would allow her to start working immediately.
Doris, who was now running a shop with her friend Lola, had more flexible hours.
“Laura, no problem. But are you sure you can handle this job?”
“It’s just busy during lunch and dinner hours. Being a waitress isn’t much different from being a nanny at the Webb family.
“Actually, it’s better here. After the busy hours, I get a two–to–three–hour break. At the Webb family, I couldn’t rest and didn’t even get paid.
Compared to that, this job is pretty good,” Laura had to lower her job expectations.
Those days of working in an office building felt like a distant memory.
“Laura, keep it up. I’ll always support you.” Doris encouraged her.
“I will.”

Half a month later, Peyton was discharged from the hospital. It happened to be the weekend, so Rupert went to pick her up. Laura was busy with work, and Doris was making final preparations for the soft opening of Loris Cafe.
After completing the discharge procedures, Rupert came over. “Dad, Mom, let’s go home.”
Jimmy said, “Rupert, I something to tell you. Ryan’s lawyer called a while ago demanding 1 million. But your mom and I don’t have that much, so we had to sell the house in Maplewood Estates. Now we have nowhere to live.
“Your place has three bedrooms. Your mom and I will move in with you for a while. Once your mom’s health improves, we’ll figure something out.”
