Chapter 2
My wolf told me I should contact the wolf pack rescue team right away. But I hesitated before dialing the wolf pack rescue team’s number again.I still had hope for Sandy. Maybe if I contacted him directly, it would be faster. After all, the area I lived in was under his jurisdiction–any
emergency would end up being his responsibility anyway.
I waited, listening to the phone ring endlessly.
My wolf flinches in anticipation. It realizes Sandy’s wolf is not taking its own messages at all, and the bond between us is getting weaker and weaker.
“Please pick up the phone Sandy, the flames are horrible!” I repeated the words.
Finally, his voice broke through the silence, frustration sharp in every word.
“I’m busy! Say what you have to say, don’t waste each other’s time!”
“Sandy, the den is on fire. Can you come and-”
I struggled to push the words through my swollen throat, each syllable feeling like a fight for life. But before I could finish, his cold reprimand cut through the line.
“Grace, please, stop being so possessive! I’ve explained a thousand times, there’s nothing between me and Lily. We’re just doing our jobs. Why can’t you just trust me?”
“You’re the daughter of Alpha and Luna, and stop making jokes about a fire and the lives of pack
members, it’s not funny!”
The noise in the background was chaotic, but I could hear Lily’s voice, high–pitched and trembling as
she called out, her words dripping with faux sweetness. “Sandy, I thought you wouldn’t care about me anymore. You’re truly my lifesaver!”
Was there truly nothing between them? I asked myself, my heart sinking further with each pass
second.
I had watched Sandy over the last year, his phone constantly ringing, day or night. Even in the dead of night, he would awaken, rubbing his tired eyes, pulling on his jacket, and rushing out the door without complaint. I had never thought much of it, attributing it to his responsibilities as the leader of the Gamma warriors, but now, it made sense. The calls were never from colleagues. They were

My body was burning now. The flames were close enough to sear my body,
With every ounce of strength, 1 dialed the Wolf Pack Rescue Team, my vision blurred as 1 focused on keeping my thoughts clear.
As 1 expected, the Omega liaison to the Crescent Pack confirmed my address and quickly transferred the call to Sandy’s team–the team he commanded,
“What? Everyone is out on emergency duty?” the Omega liaison sounded anxious. “And they’re that far away? Why not send a closer team?”
“That’s impossible! Sandy would never make such a careless decision!” The Omega liasion’s voice rose, a mix of disbelief and irritation.
There was a brief pause before the Omega liaison spoke again, sounding more distant, as though he was speaking to someone else. I realized then that he had muted the call. He must have realized I was listening,
A few moments later, the voice returned, this time apologetic: “Sorry, ma’am, the nearest rescue teams are all engaged with urgent tasks. Please stay by your phone. I’ll coordinate with another unit
right away,”
Those words felt like a death sentence. My mate, the one I had trusted, the one I had shared everything with, had failed me when I needed him the most.
