Chapter 10 Her Unreasonable Mother–in–Lawl
Ariella lived nearby.
Raul had eaten a lot at dinner, so she took him for a walk to help him digest.
She also wanted Raul to experience university culture early and develop a study mindset.
“Mom, look, there are so many people.”
Raul was an energetic child, hopping and skipping, never still.
Seeing a crowd, he ran towards it with his short legs.
Ariella, concerned, rushed to follow.
“That’s Lailah!”
“Is that her boyfriend?”
“They look great together!”
Ariella’s heart sank. She held Raul’s small hand and looked at the crowd’s center.
In the crowd, Lailah held pink roses, facing Jovan.
As the crowd cheered louder, Jovan walked over to Lailah.
Then, he put his arm around her waist.
The crowd gasped.
Lailah, leaning on Jovan, smiled shyly.
“Jovan, thanks for helping. I’ll have my agent deal with the media.”
Jovan was about to say “It’s okay,” but suddenly, he felt like someone was staring at him intensely. He knew it was Ariella.
He tensed up.
Then…
He held Lailah’s waist tighter.
Lailah pressed against his chest.
“Jovan.”
Lailah was excited.
She had waited long for this, her shoulders shaking slightly with joy.
But…
Jovan’s face showed no affection.
He was indifferent as if he didn’t care about her.
And at that moment, he was counting.
At “5,” he was still thinking about forgiving Ariella.
By “8,” he felt annoyed.
If she came back and admitted her mistake, he’d forgive her for everything. After all, she was Leonel’s mother, and he
didn’t want to make his son sad.

When he counted to “9“, the gaze vanished from behind.
He lacked the courage to count further, so he pushed Lailah away and turned instantly.
People surrounded them.
But Ariella was absent.
Lailah had been overjoyed, dreaming of soon officially becoming Jovan’s wife.
Then, she was pushed away by him.
She stumbled and nearly fell.
“Jovan, what’s wrong?”
She looked at the roses in her arms and gave them to a passerby.“These are for you, hoping you find love.”
Surprised exclamations arose around them.
She quickly linked her arm with Jovan’s.
“Jovan, I gave away the roses. Do you feel better now?”
Jovan realized late.
His breathing difficulty and chest tightness were likely a pollen allergy.

“I’m fine.”
His face hardened. “I’ll send you back.”
Lailah’s smile wavered.
“Jovan, Leo has been clingy to me recently. Maybe I should visit your place and see him?”
She didn’t need to be overt with her hints.
Jovan walked ahead, hands in pockets, his voice low.
“It’s too late, maybe another day.”
Lailah seethed with anger.
Ariella had already moved out, so why couldn’t he let her move in?
She had tried to force Ariella to leave Washington, D.C. by pressuring the kindergarten.
But unexpectedly, Raul got admitted.
Ariella was even less likely to leave now.
No.
If Ariella kept appearing before Jovan, unexpected changes might occur.
She had to find another way to ensure Ariella left the city promptly.

“Mom, you haven’t answered, is there a circus show?”
Raul had seen street performers in the countryside. People would form a circle to watch acrobatics. If the audience liked the performance, they gave money.
That was why he was excited earlier.
He kept jumping around, wanting to see the acrobatics.
Ariella remembered Jovan and Lailah hugging under the streetlight, and she felt a mix of sadness and a bitter pang.
She always believed Jovan was a good man deep down since he had saved her before, and eventually, she ended falling for him.
Over the years, she tried hard to be a good wife to him.
But she never experienced him being that openly affectionate with her in public.
Even at social events, they sat apart, not interacting.
She believed that a peaceful life for couples meant maintaining some distance.
But today, she realized that a marriage without genuine love didn’t truly bring happiness.
She took a deep breath and pressed her palm over her heart.
She expected it to hurt.
But her heart was beating calmly, and her face looked indifferent.
She had probably let go.
“Yes, there are acrobatics.”

She forced a smile, “But it’s not a monkey on a bike, it’s days fighting”
Raul was surprised.
“No wonder people say biting dogs don’t bark. I didn’t hear any barking”
Ariella was momentarily at a loss for how to respond.
At home, after putting Raul to sleep, Ariella couldn’t sleep, so she worked on her design drawings.

The next morning, after dropping Raul at school, she left, not knowing Leonel had been brought by an elderly woman.

As she entered the subway station for work, the old woman grabbed her arm.
“So it’s really you!”
Ariella recognized the voice and turned, frowning.
The old woman, clad in a long dress with her silver hair dyed black and fewer wrinkles, sported a priceless pearl necklace, yet she somehow looked rather tacky.
This woman was Jovan’s biological mother, her former mother–in–law, Sarah Turner.
Years ago, Sarah was a nanny for the Hensley family. She used that position to start a relationship with Jovan’s father Dexter and soon got pregnant.
Dexter’s wife got so angry she fell down the stairs and died.
Sarah didn’t fully take her place until she had Jovan, then she could return to the Hensley’s mansion.
But since they never married, Sarah and Jovan’s relationship wasn’t official.
When dating Jovan, Ariella heard Sarah say she was betrayed by Dexter at that time. Later, Dexter pursued Sarah for a long time before she agreed to return with Jovan.
However, Dexter, tied to family duties, refused to marry Sarah.
Ariella was young and wanted to help Sarah, so she leveraged her family to publicly announce her relationship with Jovan.
Under pressure, Sarah and Dexter finally married.
Ariella thought it would be a “happy ending,” but after marrying Jovan, Sarah always seemed to go out of her way to make things difficult for her.
Even though the Hensley family was wealthy, they didn’t hire a nanny for Ariella to help her take care of her children, simply because Sarah objected.
Learning the truth two years ago, Ariella almost cut ties with Sarah.
Later on, she only saw Sarah during holidays, all because of Jovan.
But every time, Sarah gave her a hard time, leaving her completely exhausted. Nonetheless, Jovan always insisted that Sarah’s life was tough and urged her to endure it.
Now that a divorce was pending between her and Jovan, she simply wasn’t in the mood to tolerate Sarah
anymore.
“Is there something you need?”
Her tone was cold, clearly showing hostility.
Sarah’s face burned with fury.“Where on earth have you been? And you just dumped Leo on me to take care of? I swear, I’m going to make my son divorce you!”
