It was I a.m. when Stella Sutton stumbled upon Kaylyn Greer’s post on Instagram. Thank you for the gifts, Mr. Dodson and Joel. Joel even made this cup himself!”
Stella clicked on the photo.
A necklace and a handmade DIY cup came into view.
She could vaguely make out the words on the cup:“Happy Birthday, Mom.”
Her gaze drifted to the dining table, where a cold, untouched meal and a birthday cake with unlit candles sat, a self–mocking smile tugging at her lips.
Scella remembered a recent news notification that had popped up on her phone.
“Confirmed! Ethan Dodson is actually married and has a five–year–old son.”
A picture of a tall, attractive man and a slim, attractive woman strolling hand in hand with a five–year–old boy in an amusement park was attached.
Kaylyn was smiling as she patted Joel Dodson’s head, while Ethan gazed at her with a focus and tenderness Stella had never seen before.
A handsome man and a beautiful woman, along with a little boy who looked so much like Ethan, truly seemed like a happy family of three.
Today was Stella’s birthday.
It was also the fifth anniversary of her marriage to Ethan.
Yet, it seemed like Kaylyn was the one celebrating, not her.
Her husband and son had spent the day with Kaylyn, even giving her the gifts that should have been Stella’s.
Stella was not surprised at all, as she had long been accustomed to it.
Kaylyn was Ethan’s first love. She was suffering from a terminal illness with only a year left to live.
Her last wish was to see him one more time.
Ethan said that he wanted to do something for Kaylyn and hoped that Stella could understand. Stella didn’t want to, but she knew she couldn’t stop him.
It was the first time Ethan had ever spoken to her with such seriousness.
She felt a sense of sorrow.
Stella didn’t know how long she had been sitting in the dark when the sound of the door opening
broke the silence.
Ethan walked in with Joel

Stella replied calmly, “I need to talk to you.”
Ethan furrowed his brows and looked down at Joel.
“Joel, go to bed now.”
Rubbing his eyes and yawning, Joel walked past Stella.
He seemed to recall something and then turned to her.
“Mom, happy birthday.”
Joel looked up at her with attractive eyes strikingly similar to Ethan’s.
“Dad and I didn’t mean to forget your birthday. We have plenty of time together as a family, but Kaylyn only has half a year left.
“You won’t be mad at us over such a small matter, right?”

Ethan was the first to speak.“What do you want to talk about?”
Dressed in a white shirt and black slacks, Ethan looked cold and distant.
Stella took a deep breath.“Ethan, let’s get a divorce.”
Emotion flickered briefly in Ethan’s eyes.
“Stella, I didn’t forget your birthday. I’ve already prepared your gift.”
“A gift?” Stella chuckled lightly.“You mean my mother’s necklace, the one you gave to Ms. Greer?”
Stella’s mother left the necklace to her when she died.
She had lost it on the day Joel was born.
Ethan promised to find it for her.
He did find it, but then he gave it to Kaylyn.
Ethan’s expression remained calm, showing no hint of guilt. Only his dark eyes seemed darker
than usual.
“I just lent the necklace to Kaylyn. She’ll return it to you soon.”
“How soon is it?” Stella retorted.“The day she dies?”
“Stella!” His voice was stern, cutting her off, and his usually calm out of character for him.

Enough, indeed.
She was tired of living in a marriage where her husband’s heart belonged to someone else, her son feeling closer to another woman, and her being disdained by her in–laws.
Ethan said, “Kaylyn only has six months left. Even Joel knows how to be understanding. Why are you so petty?”
At that moment, Stella decided she was done holding back.
Her voice was cold.“How much time she has left has nothing to do with me. She’s nobody to me. Why should I have to tolerate her?”

Ethan seemed to not have expected that Stella, who had always been gentle, would say something so harsh.
His eyes turned icy.“Stella, I thought we had an understanding.”
Stella sneered “She wants to relive the romance with her first love, so I have to watch you two play out your love story.
“She wants to experience a wedding, so you give her the one I spent months planning.
“You expect me to stand by while the three of you walk down the aisle together.
“She wants to see the world, so you take her on trips.
“If she asked for the moon, you’d probably find a way to give it to her, wouldn’t you?” Stella and Ethan had been married for five years but never had a wedding.
Once, when Joel asked what his mom looked like in a wedding dress, Ethan decided to make for it and let her plan everything her way.
She spent six months preparing, only for it to be taken away by Kaylyn with a single request. Ethan’s gaze turned completely cold.“Stella, you have crossed the line.”

Stella’s heart sank. She closed her eyes, feeling a wave of disappointment. For years, she had tried to be a good wife and mother.
No matter how hard she tried, Ethan always remained indifferent to her.

This was a sign of his extreme displeasure.
“What about Joel?”
Stella’s voice was soft.“He stays with the Dodson family.”
Before Ethan could respond, his phone rang.
“Ethan, something bad happened! Kaylyn suddenly fainted and was rushed to the emergency
room!”
