Chapter 143
There was a knock at the office door. It was a staff member. “Doris, Laura is here.
“Okay, I’ll be right there” Doris patted Lola. “Alright, save your excitement for tomorrow night.”
Lola then realized she had been hugging Doris too tightly. She quickly let go of Doris. “Just thinking about seeing Luna in person tomorrow makes me so excited”
“I get it.” Doris rarely saw Lola like this. She said, “I’m going out. My sister’s here.”
“Go ahead.” Lola put her hands over her chest and took a deep breath. “I’ll calm down and join you in a bit.”
Doris gave her an “OK” gesture with her right hand before leaving the office. She walked toward Laura. “You’re off today. Why are you here?”

Laura had four days off work each month. The restaurant job wasn’t too tiring, but it wasn’t easy either. Doris hoped that on her day off, Laura could take care of herself and get some real rest.
“I finished the household chores this morning. Since I have nothing to do this afternoon except pick Ari up from school, I thought I’d come by and see if there’s anything I can help with. I’m just bored at home.” Laura felt she should do something for Doris in return.
“Laura, we’ve got enough help at the shop. You don’t need to worry about it. You’re too caring. You can’t sit still for even a moment.” Doris sat Laura down and poured her a glass of water.
“Maybe it’s just a habit.” Laura held the cup in both hands, her gaze downcast and filled with sadness. “Back at the Webb family, there was always something to do every day. There was never a moment of peace.” Now, when things were quiet, she felt like something was missing.
“Laura, now that you’re away from the Webb family, don’t dwell on the bad things and people from the past. The most important thing now is to live your own life the way you want. No one can stop you.” Doris reached out and grabbed Laura’s wrist, her eyes shining.
Doris was so grateful that her sister had crawled out of the hell that was the Webb family and had a whole new life. It took a lot of courage, and Doris admired her sister for it.
“Mm.” Laura squeezed Doris’s hand in return. Doris was her biggest support and strength.
Doris then pulled her hand back and looked at Laura. “Laura, there’s something I need to tell you. It’s about Mom and Dad.” “What happened? Are they causing you trouble again?” Laura furrowed her brow, looking concerned.
“No,” Doris said, taking a sip of water. “It looks like the locks on Rupert’s door were changed. They can’t get in.”
“Then they called me, and I went to pick them up and put them up at the nearby Azure Hotel for now. But that’s not a long- term solution. I called Rupert. He’s out, but he should be back today.”
“The locks were changed?” Laura asked, clearly surprised. “Who did that?”
Doris didn’t speak. Even though she had her suspicions, she didn’t want to say anything without evidence.
“Rupert isn’t home. What about Claudia? Didn’t she open the door for them?” Laura pressed.
“Claudia went back to her parents‘ place,” Doris said.
“That’s quite the coincidence,” Laura said with a slight smirk. “If they didn’t plan this together, then one of them did it.”

Doris sighed quietly and took another sip of water. “Let’s wait until Rupert gets back and clear things up.”

“Doris, our parents are totally devoted to Rupert. They put in the money and effort, but when have they ever thought of you and me? They’ve said Rupert is their only son, and that they’re depending on him for their old age. They don’t expect anything from us.
“It’s only natural that they live with Rupert. As daughters, we just need to show our respect. But if Rupert ignores them, you can’t be foolish and take it all on yourself.”
Laura said seriously, “You’re not alone anymore. You and Lewis have started your own home. That’s your shared home now. You can’t make decisions on your own.
“Lewis is a good guy. He might not mind, but having our parents live with you guys long–term isn’t a wise choice. Doris, knowing how our parents are, even if Rupert isn’t great, he’s still their son. They can’t change that.
“Rupert and Claudia won’t appreciate you, and they’ll just think it’s their right. If you’re foolish enough to take on this responsibility, and I mean this seriously, it could ruin your marriage with Lewis. I’m not going to let you get involved in this. It’s Rupert’s issue. It’s his responsibility.”
Laura gave this long speech because she didn’t want Doris to feel soft–hearted and take it all on herself without getting any benefit.
“Laura, I know. I won’t this time,” Doris said firmly. “Even if Lewis agrees, I won’t.”
Laura finally relaxed, a small smile appearing on her lips. Just then, Doris’s phone rang. Rupert’s name was flashing on the
screen.
Doris answered the call, “Hello.”
“Doris, I–I’m back,” Rupert said, still a little scared of Doris.
In the Reed family, he was the boss–his parents spoiled him, letting him do whatever he wanted. Laura was always gentle, speaking softly.
Only Doris had never let him get away with things and would even go against him. Now that Doris was married and had Lewis as her support, he dared not act up.
“You’re back, good. Laura and I are together. I’ve told her about mom and dad. We’re going to Azure Hotel now, come too. You’re their son, you can’t avoid dealing with this,” said Doris.
“I understand.” Rupert was feeling very confused.
Doris put away her phone. “Laura, let me just tell Lola, then we’ll go.”
you should
Doris went to tell Lola about the situation, and Lola, somewhat impatient, said, “Doris, remember, you’re not an employee, you’re the boss. You don’t need to tell me when you’re going out. I trust you.”
“We’re partners, of course, I need to let you know,” Doris said, showing respect.
“From now on, no need,” Lola smiled. “I won’t tell you when I go out either. We’re even.”
Doris and Laura left the Loris Cafe and went to the Azure Hotel. When they arrived, Rupert was already there. His home was nearby, so it didn’t take him long.
Rupert was waiting in the lobby lounge, not daring to go up alone to see their parents. Although their parents spoiled him, this situation was serious, and he was afraid of being scolded.
When he saw his two sisters, he stood up and greeted them. “Laura, Doris.”
