Jaden froze.
For a moment, the world around them ceased to exist.
The air between them was hot, tense, full of something unspoken, something raw. His lips turned into a tight straight line and his jaw tightened. His hands balled into fists at his sides and his nails dug deeper into his palms.
His heart was pounding so loud he was sure that someone ten miles away could hear it clearly
John’s words shouldn’t have affected him. They shouldn’t have meant a damn thing to him.
But truth be told, they did.
Jaden looked at his brother deeply for any sign that this was some kind of cruel joke, that John was talking about some other night.
Instead of the one that had almost destroyed his life.
His throat felt dry, his body stiff as stone.
“What are you talking about?” he finally asked, his voice hoarse, evidently of the storm roaring inside of him.
John straightened his body and inhaled deeply before speaking again. His voice was sharp and strong at the same time.
“What if you aren’t the one responsible for her death?”
Jaden’s breath hitched and a cold shiver crawled down his spine.
For almost six years now, he had carried that night like a boulder attached to his soul; he had lived in the weight of it, let it eat him, let it dictate his life.
He took a few steps back and looked away from John’s direction.
“There’s no fucking way,” he replied but even though he tried to say it with a strong tone, he couldn’t help but notice the shakiness in his voice. “No way, “he repeated.
He clenched his jaw, forcing himself to regain control.
This was a trick. A sick, twisted game.
He turned his head slightly, glaring at John with suspicion.
“You are here because Jake sent you, aren’t you? “Jaden screamed venomously. “He wants to know how bad I’m doing without the family’s money to If I’m desperate enough to come crawling back for his damn inheritance.”
He laughed out loud as he looked away, shaking bis head.
“Well, go ahead. Run back to him and tell him I don’t want a damn thing from him.”
“I’m serious, Jaden.” John’s voice was different this times. He sounds too serious. “I know what happened that night.” he added.
Jaden’s patience snapped.
“Enough of this bullshit!” he shouted. His voice echoed down the street, his entire body was shaking with fury.

But John didn’t even as much as flinch.
Instead, he took a step forward and raised a bag in his hand.
“I have evidence here with me,” John said, his voice steady despite the intensity between them.
Jaden’s chest rose and fell rapidly as his eyes locked onto the bag. His mind screamed at him to walk away, to not take the bait, to not hope.
But his feet remained glued to the ground.
His eyes flickered back to John’s face, searching desperately for any sign of deception.
“And why,” Jaden rasped, his voice barely above a whisper now,” why should I believe you?”
John exhaled slowly.
“Because our father’s life is at stake.”
Silence.
Jaden swallowed hard and took in deep, sharp breaths.
