Chapter 173

Chapter 173

Liam POV

There are rogues everywhere. It is not your typical rogue attack but one that has been cleverly organized. They worked in teams to take out pack members, and while none had been severely injured, thanks to Alpha Max and me, there was no telling how long the fight would go on and whether we could work hard enough so that all of the omegas would get to safety. I felt dread rise inside of the pit of my stomach. I was infinitely grateful that I had instructed Fiona to remain behind, fearful that she would get injured. As long as she stayed back in the study with Celeste, I would have nothing to worry about in regard to her. I was, however, a little surprised to see that Celeste hadn’t joined the fight, considering she had an Alpha wolf and would have been useful in the fight. She must have cared more about the child she was carrying than she wanted to admit. That meant she wasn’t a horrible person or at least not as bad as she was made out to be

Alpha Max was a sight to behold. A magnificent black wolf, he rose to the challenge. There was a reason he had a reputation for being ruthless, and he was showing it. Everywhere I looked, he was in the frey. I watched him dispatch one wolf with ease before heading over to help some omegas who were cornered in front of a large bush by two more rogues. As I leaped atop the back of one, clamping my jaws down tight on their neck and shaking it rapidly to sever the neck from its spinal cord, I spotted a white wolf in the distance. It was moving quickly, dispatching rogues left and right. Regan and the others were further into the forest, separating in order for each of them to be able to take out as many rogues at once as they possibly could. Between four alpha wolves and one white wolf, we were a formidable force, and I was starting to believe we had hope in winning this battle. Then it struck me who the white wolf had to be, and I gave a low growl in my throat even as I recognized just how agile and easily she was moving, her goal to save the omegas and children, going for any rogue nearby that attempted to harm them. She was glorious

My mate had joined the fight despite my wishes for her not to. I moved closer to her, keeping a wary eye, concerned for her safety although she was just as fierce as any other warrior, dispatching rogue after rogue before turning and looking to make sure those she saved had made it to safety. I felt claws wipe across my midsection as I faced off against three, letting out a growl of anger. I dodged the next attack, clawing at the rogue’s throat and cutting its neck. It bled out, dropping to the hard ground with a heavy thud. I turned around and saw that Alpha Max was still fighting through the ranks, his body moving so fast he was almost a blur. I admired him greatly. He had a reputation for being a great fighter, and to see him in action was aweinspiring. I continued to weave and dodge, protecting those I could, and I was grateful to see that most of the omegas and children had managed to make a run for the grounds safely. Hopefully, they would head towards the panic room that all pack houses contained and hole up in there until the fight was over. I wondered absently how Regan and the others were doing. As a white wolf, Regan would be just as formidable as Fiona was proving to be, and the Alpha twins had a reputation for being fierce warriors. They should be fine, I thought, trying to focus on the task at hand

A howl filled the air. It sounded like a wolf in pain and was chilling. I didn’t recognize it. It could have been a rogue or one of our own who had gotten majorly hurt. I saw my mate’s head shoot up suddenly, her ears pricking out of the corner of my eye, and then she shot off further into the woods without warning. Had the call been one of her parents? I tried to move, to head on after her, but several rogues suddenly surrounded myself and Alpha Max without warning, glints in their eyes, foam frothing from their mouths, tongues poking out. All of them were malnourished, and it was easy to see why they had chosen to attack. They were hungry as well as bloodthirsty, a common trait amongst rogues as they didn’t have a pack to call home. These rogues, however, seemed to have formed some sort of pack or group of their own. I wondered if they had some sort of grudge against this pack, which would have explained why they chose to attack together as one large force. I glanced at Alpha Max’s wolf, but he remained calm and stoic. There were at least eight of them. I lunged towards one, quickly dispatching it, and then rolled out of the way as two tried to attack simultaneously. I turned and whacked one of them, sending them flying through the air and just managed to dodge to the side as another one attacked with their claws. Alpha Max managed to dispatch one before turning and beginning to fight against two more, snarling heavily. I hurt another one with claws, leaving it prone on the floor. That left five more. I leaped in the air and clamped my jaws around the neck of a third, causing it to try and buck me off without success. I bit through its neck and then dropped to the floor, hitting another one with my tail as it tried to attack from behind. A fifth one was quickly killed by Alpha Max, leaving three to deal with. Three were a lot easier to manage than eight had been. I saw warriors beginning to head closer to us, dispatching any other rogues attempting to come to their comradesassistance

The wolves glanced at each other warily. Five of their comrades had been killed, and they were aware of the possibility they would be next. I saw them silently communicate even as I tried to attack one again, all three of them attempting to turn tail and run. The entire time, my thoughts remained on my mate, my priority getting to her and making sure she was safe. I could not believe how stubborn she was. Alpha Max and I took one out together, pinning it to the floor, Alpha Max making quick work of him. The other two were gone by then, but considering the number of warriors there were in the forest, I had

high doubts they would make it out of the woods or the territory safely. I panted, before beginning to move, my paws thudding along the ground, heading in the direction that my mate Fiona had gone to, my heart pounding loudly in my chest. I would have heard or felt the mate bond severed if she was dead, but that didn’t mean my worry for her was unwarranted. She could be majorly hurt. If that happened I would never forgive myself. I should have dispatched the rogues quicker, I thought, slightly panicked when I couldn’t reach my mate via mindlink

Hang on, Fiona, I thought inwardly, pushing myself to move harder and faster, my head bowed against the fierce wind, I’m coming. Just hang on a little longer. I’m almost there. Talk to me, baby. Talk to me, I urged, still finding a block when I tried to communicate with her

I moved, and as I made it into a small clearing, I saw a sight I hadn’t anticipated, causing me to stop in my tracks. I saw the tears on her face, saw her body trembling, and most of all, saw that she had shifted into her human form even though she was still in danger from approaching rogues. Whatever had happened in my absence was so devastating that even as I approached, she could not bring herself to turn her head and look at me. I had never seen her like this. Not in all the time we had spent together. I sucked in a breath, moving tentatively, wondering if I could do something to make her look at me. If I could just see her clearly, see what she was kneeling beside, I might be able to help

Had I been too late? My mate was not severely injured; her body was only littered with small bruises and scrapes. But her head was bowed and she was not speaking, causing me to feel as though something was terribly wrong. I heard the sound of ferocious roars and turned my head to see two large black wolves heading into the clearing, their eyes glittering with anger and their bodies tense as they paused right next to Fiona
