Chapter 1
Chapter 1
When I woke up choking on the smoke, I found myself deep in flames, but the distress call came
with my mate’s taunt.
“Leave me alone, I’m working.”
Into the cacophony of background sounds, was interspersed Lily’s sweet voice: “Thank you Captain Gamma Rescue, you’re my superhero!”
Fire burns my fur and tail, in a trance, I saw the wolf pack information push, is the Gamma rescue team mobilized all the rescue forces, successfully rescued the rogue wolf girl’s good news.
If I remember correctly, this is the ninety–ninth time Lily has deliberately put herself in danger.
I despair at the deformation of the door, suffocated and fainted before the second, I sent a last text
message.
No one knows the content of this text message, but it drove the heroic and strong Gamma Rescue Team leader crazy.
“I would give my life for yours! Please come back alive!” A wail came from the wolves.
I saw my own body, curled up in the corner of the balcony, stiff and contorted like the sculpture in the shape of a wolf on Luna Plaza. Even without breath, the faint trace of life was still evident in my expression–a desperate, unrelenting longing for survival.
A damp towel fell from my left wolf claw, its surface marked by the soot and blackened stains left behind from the smoke that had filtered through it. My right hand–oh, it was unrecognizable. The skin had charred and peeled, revealing crimson blood and raw flesh underneath. My pinky was nothing but a small piece of white bone.
So, am I now out of the wolves and into the world of Luna?
Twenty minutes ago, I had been awoken from my sleep by the acrid sting of smoke. The air was thick, suffocating. I opened my eyes, and all I could see was the thick fog of smoke consuming everything around me. The fire had started in the kitchen and spread through the living room, taking over nearly half of the space.
My instincts called for my wolf, the wolf inside me responding with clarity as I grabbed the towel,

dampened it, and pressed it to my mouth to shield myself from the smoke. With urgency, I bent low, searching for the door handle.
I know these self–help skills thanks to Sandy, who patiently taught them to me when we were close. He was the member of the Gamma Warriors, the leader of the rescue team. He’d taught me to stay calm in emergencies.
The door lock was glowing red from the heat. The towel barely protected me from the burn as I instinctively yanked on the handle, but the metal seared my fingers, the sensation biting through my skin. I winced as my tender fingers blistered, the pain sharp.
I transformed into a wolf and tried to break through the door’s barrier, but the werewolf’s fear of flame forced me to move very slowly.
Flames, a taboo engraved in the werewolf’s DNA.
The door refused to budge. The frame had warped in the heat, holding the door shut, as if it too were
determined to trap me here, to seal my fate. The smoke grew thicker by the second, filling every inch
of my vision. My head grew heavy, dizziness sweeping over me, the signs of flame and smoke
poisoning creeping in. I could feel my heartbeat slow, my body struggling to stay conscious.
I turned into human. My wolf could feel it too–the weight of the death surrounding us. It roared,
thrashing against the confines of my mind, desperate to escape, to act.
I staggered to the balcony, the cool night air rushing to meet me. I threw the window wide open, gasping for air as I dialed the number.
The first call went to Sandy.
He was the one I needed, the one who would come to my rescue. Today was his shift. His Gamma
warriors were only five minutes away. Fire rescue was his specialty.
“Your call cannot be completed as dialed. Please try again later.”
The voice on the other end of the line was cold, indifferent. It felt like a slap in the face.
I looked down at the phone in my trembling hand. The number I had dialed was his exclusive phone number for me, the one he’d given me with that firm promise.
“Grace, this is my most important phone. It’s for emergencies only. It won’t be turned off, and I’ll always answer when you call. Only you know the number.”

“Wherever you are, whatever the danger. If you call, I’ll be there,”
But now, there was nothing but silence.
