Chapter 32
Sienna froze, her face going pale for a split second. She hadn’t expected me to know the truth.
I smiled slightly, a bitter taste in my mouth. “What do you think Nathan would do if I told him about that?”
Her confidence wavered, but only for a moment. She recovered quickly, stepping closer to me with a smirk on her lips. “Yes, I lied to him. I didn’t want him around back then. He was dirty and pathetic, and I didn’t want our family to take him in. So what?” She tilted her head, her smile turning almost playful. “Go ahead, tell him. Let’s see who he believes–me or you.”
I held my ground, but her next words hit hard.
“Grace, don’t forget your useless mother is dead.” Her voice dropped to a whisper, mocking. “And right now, Dad’s on my side. He won’t believe anything you say. Who do you think will prove your version of the story? You have no one.”
She wasn’t wrong. I had no proof–no one to back me up. And standing there in that moment, I realized that arguing with her was pointless. She reveled in her ability to manipulate, to twist people to her will. Nathan was just another piece in her game.
I felt a wave of disgust wash over me. What was the point in fighting over him? If she loved Nathan
so much, she could have him. I didn’t need to cling to a man who couldn’t see through her lies.
I came here to build my own future, not to get dragged into this childish power struggle. This night
wasn’t about Nathan or Sienna–it was about me making connections, solidifying my place in the
business world.
Just as I was about to walk away, Nathan’s voice rang out from the stage, loud and clear. “Thank you all for attending the Johnson family’s charity dinner,” he announced, his tone smooth and confident. “Tonight, aside from discussing matters related to our charity projects, I also have another important event to share with all of you.”
The crowd hushed as Nathan’s eyes scanned the room. And then, across the sea of people, his gaze
locked on mine.
At that moment, his expression softened, and there was something else in his eyes–something deep and emotional. He was about to make an announcement, and somehow, I had the sinking feeling it
involved me.
