Chapter 1
Everyone in the legal industry of the capital knew one thing that top lawyer Kyle Smith adored his
wife above all else.
To mark his claim, he tattooed my name on his collarbone.
Even though his work often took him across multiple countries, he’d always carve out time to return
and be with me.
But today, outside my office, I overheard his employees joking among themselves.
“Boss just got back a few days ago, and now he’s off again, accompanying Linda Jackson overseas
for some indulgence.”
“What do you know? Linda starving for attention, and it’s up to our boss to satisfy her.”
“You’re not wrong there. Linda really is top–tier–her figure… wow.”
“Of course. Last time, in the office, they used up six boxes of… you know.”
I fell silent, glancing at the message Kyle had sent me this morning.
“I’m handling a divorce case overseas this time, darling. Stay home and wait for me.”
What he didn’t know was, this time, the client was me.
I left without a word and took a taxi home.
On the wall was a wedding photo of Kyle and me. In the picture, he gazed at me with deep affection.
Beside me was a video sent by Linda.
In the video…
Linda’s hands were tied to the headboard with a tie, and her sexy figure–hugging skirt had been pushed up to her waist.
The usually cold and composed Kyle was now red–eyed, his breathing ragged, as he took the woman beneath him to the heights of pleasure.
I remained silent for a moment, then turned off the screen.

The floor–to–ceiling window reflected my image.
My makeup was ruined from tears, eyeliner smudged across my face, looking a mess.
I trembled as I typed a message to Kyle using a burner account.
“My husband is in a hotel room with his mistress. What should I do?”
An hour passed before he replied.
“Save the proof of your husband’s infidelity, and send it to me.”
“Okay, I’ll organize it and send it to you in a few days.”
I used the burner account to officially hire Kyle.
I asked him to help me win this divorce case.
Darling, I hope when you receive the evidence, you’ll be satisfied.
I couldn’t sleep that night.
The next morning, just as the sun was rising, I heard the rumble of an engine and the screech of tires from below.
Kyle carefully made his way upstairs and opened the bedroom door, but froze when he saw my
back.
“Baby, why are you up so early?”
I told him the truth.
“I couldn’t sleep.”
“What happened?”
Kyle’s eyes were filled with worry and panic. He quickly crossed the room and pulled me into his
arms.
“Baby, is it because I haven’t been spending enough time with you these past few days? Are you
upset?”
I nodded in agreement.

gime.
Kyle was filled with guilt, cupping my face in his hands and gently soothing me.
“It’s all my fault, I’ll cancel all my work today and stay with you. I’m not going anywhere.”
I looked up at him, staring at his lips as I slowly leaned in.
Kyle’s eyes showed desire, and just as he leaned down to kiss me, I turned my face away, reaching up to wipe the hickey on his neck.
“Kyle, you’re dirty.”
For a moment, his breath hitched.
As someone accustomed to power and manipulation, he had long cultivated the ability to stay calm. under pressure.
He smiled and patted my head.
“I was in a hurry to come back and be with you. I didn’t notice. I’ll go shower right now.”
I didn’t respond and went to freshen up.
Kyle thought he had hidden everything perfectly, not realizing he had already started sweating
nervously.
In the bathroom, the sound of water filled the air.
Kyle clenched his phone and muttered in a low voice.
“I told you not to contact me recently. If my wife finds out, I won’t let you off the hook.”
Linda’s voice was filled with sorrow as she cried softly.
“But I bought you that lace dress you love. Don’t you want to see it?”
Kyle didn’t answer, hanging up the phone.
His breath grew heavier, and he turned the cold water on full blast.
After lunch, Kyle was all excited to take me to the fair.
The lively hustle and bustle of the fair helped ease the discomfort in my heart.
Kyle was holding various snacks, coaxing me to eat more.

We walked over to a wishing wall, where countless wish plaques hung, covering it like a thick forest.
Kyle squeezed my hand gently.
“Baby, want to hang one?”
I was about to shake my head and refuse when his phone suddenly rang.
It was Linda’s exclusive ringtone.
He hurriedly hung up, but the calls kept coming in, one after another.
I looked at him calmly. “Answer it.”
Kyle answered the call, annoyance clear on his face. “Didn’t I tell you? I’m spending the day with my
wife. Stop calling me!”
I couldn’t hear what was being said on the other end, but Kyle’s breath suddenly became heavier,
and his eyes darkened with desire.
He turned to look at me, his face full of guilt. “Sorry, baby, there’s a tricky case I need to handle.”
I nodded, suppressing the nausea churning inside me.
“Work is important.”
I took a few deep breaths, clenching my hands into fists.
At the highest point of the wishing wall hung our plaque–mine and Kyle’s.
I took it down and traced my fingers over the faded characters.
“In the late years, on the mountain road, may we walk together, growing old side by side–Imela
Barau and Kyle”
Back then, Kyle looked at me with deep affection, and his words were sincere.
“May we walk together through life, hand in hand, until our hair turns white, never leaving each other, always bound in life and death.”
I had once been lost in those eternal promises, unable to escape.
Now, rusted vows and decaying feelings–I’d had enough.

Expressionless, I threw the plaque into the trash and turned to leave.
Linda sent a message.
“He said he was thirsty and insisted I help him get water, but it made me feel so itchy.”
