Chapter 38
Third POV
Caesar opened the door for Imela, and she stepped out with her umbrella. She was at the cemetery where they laid Elena to rest years ago. She thought about bringing Ocean along to finally see his great–grandmother’s grave since she spoke about her often, but it wasn’t time yet.
She unfurled her umbrella and put it up to shield her from the scorching sun because she would be here
for a while.
“Should I wait around, or will you call me when your time here is done?” Caesar asked as she walked down and towards Elena’s grave.
“I will be here for a while,” she replied, permitting him to leave until she reached out to him.
The car drove away a minute later, and she came to the tombstone, which had Elena’s information
engraved on it.
Here lies Elena Barau, mother, grandmother, and friend. Rest in the bosom of the Lord.‘ and underneath the writing were her birth and death dates.
She set the rose flower on the grave and stared at it.
Four years had gone by since she watched her die, and it still felt like yesterday. She remembered the fearful look in her eyes as she saw her in a state of helplessness. She saw the pain that took over Elena’s eyes when she realised she couldn’t do anything to help. She remembered it all, and the memories hurt. She promised to make her smile and happy, but instead, she gave her pain, fear, and death.
Her eyes stung as she tried to fight back the tears, remembering how much she wanted her grandmother to live.
“You need to stop working yourself out, mama; my job at the university’s library gets me by well enough, so I don’t need any more from you. You need to take care of yourself and stress less because you are already old and not as strong anymore,” she remembered telling her.
“I know that, but I want to work and save up against rainy days,” she replied.
“There are no rainy days ahead, mama. I am with Oliver now, and we will take care of you like you deserve,” she informed her. “Do not worry, you’re in good hands.”
Elena smiled brightly and said, “Alright, I will let go of some.”
That was the week before her hospitalisation due to stress, and after that, she had to let some jobs go.

Elena saw rainy days ahead, but she didn’t. She couldn’t see; she was in love with Oliver, and things were good, so she believed it would remain that way. How naïve she was.
“It took so long, but I came back, mama,” she said and placed her hand on the tombstone, ignoring how hot it was because of the sun’s heat. “I came back like I promised.”
She sat down beside the grave, holding the umbrella over her head. “I am sorry for what happened to you. I truly am. You were an angel in this cruel world, and you deserved so much better than what you got. You deserved justice even though you never got it.” Tears ran down her face, and she wiped them off.

The murder case closed a year after the investigation because the police found no leads. The case was marked as unsolved, but they couldn’t put more resources into it since it was a dead end anyway. world wasn’t fair, but despite that, there was a silver lining.
“I found my father,” she announced, hoping Elena would be happy to hear it. “They threw me over the bridge to kill me, but they didn’t know they were handing me back to my father. He’s a good man, and though I wish I met him sooner, I am glad I met him when I did. I also have a twin sister; you already know that. She’s late, so I am sure she, you, and Mom are together now. I’ve seen many pictures and videos of Valerie, and she looks so much like me. I wish I met her, but I know I will meet her someday.”
“I also have a son; his name is Ocean Lyam Garcia. He’ll turn four soon. He’s the best thing that came out of the hell I faced. I love him more than anything else in this world; you would have loved him.”

Ocean always reminded me of Elena; his cheerfulness and his strength were unmatched; he knew when she was down and knew just how to comfort her. She felt like she lost Elena and got Ocean as consolation.
“I couldn’t get you the justice you deserved for four years, but I will not fail until every last one of them pays for what they did to you–for what they did to me. I will tear them down from the top to the bottom. I will make them wish they hadn’t known me. They will beg for mercy, but they will find none. I swear to you, Mama, I will make them pay.”
Three hours later, Ceasar drove her to the Spring Hill Recovery Centre, following her directions. He opened the door for her after their arrival, and she got down and made her way inside. Unlike at the cemetery, she already told him to wait for her. She didn’t plan to stay long here; she had one objective: confirm the findings, then leave,
She walked over to the office of Dr. Jordan Yates, whom she had spoken with over the phone a few days ago. He kept her updated with the recovery process and all the information she needed. When he asked who she was to the patient, she told him she was his girlfriend, who had been out of the States for a while and didn’t learn of his admission until recently.
The doctor took her along to visit his ward. “His recovery is still amazing. When he first came in six months ago, he was a complete mess, but he’s been sober since then. The psychiatrist’s evaluation said his mind was sound and functioning. We look to release him in a few weeks.”
She smiled. “Oh, I’m glad to hear that.”

He stopped walking when he came to the ward’s door. “He’s in there.” He stepped away to let her www through the glass door, and there sat Seth on the bed, in a white uniform, staring at the wall as though someone was there. “Do you want to speak to him?” the doctor asked.
“No, I don’t think I have the heart to go in here, I am glad he’s getting better and can’t wait until he gets out,” she replied.
