Chapter 62
Thirteen years ago.
“There he is, Oliver freaking Plane, the hero of this movie.” Zion taunted with a smirk curled at the corner of his lips, and behind him were his three other friends who helped him wreak havoc wherever he went.
I wasn’t always their prey, though. Three years ago, I went against them because they were bullying Nancy Nyango, a disabled girl in our class, during lunch break. They asked her to come collect her glasses if she could while holding them up, knowing she couldn’t get up from her wheelchair. I came up from behind, took the glasses from Zion’s hand, and returned them to Nancy. Before they could retaliate, the history teacher walked into the hall and sent us to our various classes.
Since then, I have become a target.
At first, it was the ‘hero‘ name–calling, but last year, it progressed into a more aggressive tactic, such as taking my lunch box and emptying my food into the trashcan. They would occasionally pour drinks on me, and when called out by teachers, they would say it was a joke.
From the way Stiles called my family’s business whenever he bullied me, I knew the Planes were a topic of discussion in their household. Perhaps this was why his bullying tactics increased. I saw the hatred he had on his face, and it was only a matter of time before the bullying turned physical.
He hit me in the stomach two months ago, and it hurt so much that I couldn’t walk well for days. Every time we met, the abuse didn’t get better–it got worse. The best way out was to run away whenever I saw them and do my best not to be alone in the hallway.
Today, however, I had a few assignments to take out of my locker and take home for the weekend. I got them mixed up and had to start over as quickly as I could.
My heart picked up, realising what his presence meant, and I tried to shove my books faster into my bag so I could close my locker and run away. I wasn’t fast enough, though, because Silas, one of Zion’s friends, grabbed my bag and threw it onto the floor. My books, pens, and math set flew onto the floor. I picked my bag up and ran over to pick up the books. I picked up three, but Mark kicked them farther across the
hallway.
My eyes grew glassy, and I bit my lips to keep the tears in. They would only worsen things if they knew they could get to me. I couldn’t give them that satisfaction. Once again, I walked to my book to pick it up, but Zion stepped on it so that the only way I would pick it up was if I pulled it out from under his feet. Doing that would rip the book in two, and he knew that. I glanced up at Zion and found a smug look on
his face.
“What are you going to do about your book, hero?” He asked, staring down at me in victory.

My teeth grifted, and I grabbed his leg on my books and dug my teeth into his flesh, bating a hard as t could
The screamed out and tried to shake me off, but I didn’t let go I was determined to rip his flesh off. Get this Bicker off mo! he yelled to his friends after failing to shake me off. They landed on me, viking and hitting. I finally let go, and they continued to hit me until I couldn’t move. Someone came to my detek but I had been badly beaten up and couldn’t look up at who it was.
Come near me, and I will bash your heads in! You think I’m scared to use it?” He demanded and slammed the weapon in his hand against the locker, making an echo run through the furllway, “Come at me, and I will test it on your heads!”
Come on, let’s get out of here,” Zion called to them, and his friends fell back
What sounded like a bat fell, and I felt at hand on my shoulder the next second.
“Are you okay?” The one with the energy–filled tone earlier now sounded soft and concerned.
My hands dropped from my face, and I saw the boy with the widest hazel eyes and black hair asking
I nodded, not able to speak from everything that had just happened and also from the fact that this boy had made four people run away with a bat.
He smiled. “Good, can you stand?” He said, already offering me his hand.
“Yeah.” I said, taking hold of it, and he pulled me onto my feet.
“Good, everything seemed to be in place.” He said, and his eyes scanned what they could of me.
“You shouldn’t have helped me,” I told him, knowing what was now in store for him. “They will come for
you next.”
He didn’t look bothered; if anything, he looked happy to hear that. “Good. I look forward to it. Jack and I will have a good time teaching some assholes a lesson.” He said, raising the bat in his hand.
Just who was this kid?
He moved around and helped me pick up my bag and books on the floor. “You carry that thing around in school, and they let you?” I asked, eyeing his bat.
He grinned, and his eyes flickered. “It’s in my locker; no one looks, so no one knows.”
“Cool, that’s badass.”
“Not as badass as what you did with your teeth back there.”

I laughed; it was pathetic at best, but he thought differently. “Thank you for helping me out. I am Oliver Plane.”
“I know; I am Vivian Aina.”
Flashback ends.
I stayed at the parking lot because I didn’t want to go up, as I had no invitation from Ela to visit. I had done that twice, and I didn’t want to repeat it. The only person I wanted to see was Ela. Not her security, and not Ingrid. Ela.
It was almost closing, and I knew she would go through here. Her car was parked here, and so I waited. I didn’t know what I would do once I saw her, but the first step would be to ask for an explanation. She ignored me for a week after kissing me, and now she was dating Zion, of all people. The very thought was blasphemous.
1 soon saw her approaching her car, and I got down from mine and approached her. She saw me and slowed her pace. She didn’t look pleased, and I wasn’t the happiest, either.
I walked up to her, but Benjamin stepped in my way. With the anger coursing through my veins, I would gladly take Benjamin on.
I paused when we came to stand face–to–face. “I would advise you to step away, Mr Plane.”
“You first, buddy,” I growled.
“It’s fine,” Ela said, and Benjamin’s defence fell.
He stepped aside, and I paced over to her. She wore her usual, unreadable look, but I was going to get my answer. “Is it true?” I demanded, not bothering to add more details because I knew if I did, I would explode.
“And if it is?” She challenged, “Then you will do what?”
I stood stunned, unable to speak, staring at her. “That’s why you ignored me this past week. You’ll do this to me after what we shared? After I told you how I felt?”
“Everything isn’t always about you, Mr. Plane, and I am not obligated to return your affections.” She hissed out irritatedly.
She was right, but she didn’t have to hurt me this way. “You do not know who he is or what he’s done. You are dating my enemy.”
“He’s your business rival, Mr. Plane; everyone knows that; he’s not your enemy.” She said casually.
My teeth gritted. “Stop fucking calling me by that name.”

“What exists between us is business; I owe you nothing more, Mr. Plane. The sooner you accept that, the better it will be for you.” She said and walked past me.
Tve always been yours, Imela,” I said, and she halted. “But you have never been mine. Not then, not
now.” I said.
She walked into her car without looking back, and it drove off, leaving me with a bleeding heart.
