“She’s just a waitress. You can find better women in any bar, man,”
The wealthy guy scoffed.
“Come on, who’s ever complained about too many women?”
“You broke up with Emily Lane, but that didn’t stop you from hitting the clubs.“]
I kept smiling. “I could add you, too, if you’d like.”
“No way! Emma, cut it out!”
Alexander couldn’t hold back anymore, his voice laced with anger.
The rich guy frowned, finally sensing something was off. “Walt.. you two know each
other?”
“We’ve known each other for three years, actually.”
I set down the drink tray and pulled out two red marriage certificates. “We’ve been
married for three years. Do you need a formal introduction?”
The rich guy was stunned.
Even the woman on Alexander’s arm looked lost, staring at the marriage certificates
in my hand.
“What?!” The rich guy covered his mouth in shock.
“Emma, this is my grandfather’s birthday! Don’t make a scene.”
Alexander grabbed my arm, fury in his eyes.
I pulled away from him.]
Slap!
I slapped him hard across the face.
After all this time pretending. Alexander, the great actor, must be done with his
performance now, right?
The sound of the slap echoed.]
Nearly every guest turned to look. [
Alexander held his cheek, staring at me in disbelief.
I’d always been gentle and kind.||
Throughout our relationship and marriage, we’d never fought.
This was the first time I’d ever laid a hand on him. []
More and more people started watching us.
Alexander’s face darkened, and he dragged me toward the back. []
“Let’s go somewhere private, and I’ll explain everything.“]

I pulled my arm free, glaring at him coldly.
“What’s there to explain? Haven’t you tested me enough?”
He didn’t seem to care about his lies.
Instead, he was furious.
“Emma, you’re embarrassing me in front of everyone! Do you know how this makes ||
me look? You’ve humiliated me!”
That’s exactly what I wanted–for him to feel ashamed.]
How could I have been so blind to marry this man?
I thought he was simple and straightforward.
Instead, he deceived me, partied behind my back, and treated me like a stand–in. []
Even with all his money, he never spent a dime on me. He ignored and belittled me

I couldn’t even imagine him ever loving or cherishing me as his wife.
“There’s nothing more to say. Let’s end this on a good note and part ways.“[]

“Come on. Emma, don’t play hard to get. You’re from a small town–marrying me is
the best thing that ever happened to you.“[
I was about to respond when a butler walked in with several staff members.
“Sir, Mr. and Mrs. Carter, along
hall.”
The butler glanced at me.

After what had just happened at the party, plenty of eyes were on us.[]

A woman in a tailored dress, her face lined with disapproval, stared at us.
I didn’t miss the disdain in her eyes as she glanced at me.
I sat across from them like I was on trial.
“I heard someone say this woman is y
your wife?”
“When did you get married, and why am I only hearing about this now?”
Mrs. Carter gave me a withering look.
“Not just anyone can enter our family. Plenty of women have tried to latch onto my]
son. The key to life is knowing your place.”
I scoffed internally. Like mother, like son.
“Ma’am, these are our marriage certificates. Feel free to verify them.”
I’d held back earlier for Alexander’s sake, but with the way they were talking, I wasn’t
Interested in playing nice anymore.
“We’ve been married for three years. If you don’t believe it, go ahead and check. 1
have no interest in forcing my way into your family.”

They took the certificates and inspected the official seals and document numbers,
sending the butler to verify them.
