To control me better and make me “grateful,” Alexander kept that money
Chapter 10
The woman looked at me with a hint of challenge in her eyes.
I glanced at her.
This was Emily Lane, Alexander’s ex–the one who was his “one true love” and who,
frankly, looked just a little bit like me.[]
“Emily, don’t make a scene. People are watching.”
Alexander said softly, his eyes filled with unmistakable affection. []
I glanced at him–what a pathetic excuse for a man. []
Clearly, he hadn’t changed a bit. []
Without another word, I turned around and got into my car, leaving them behind. []
He’s already reconnecting with his ex, and he still thought he could hold on to me?
What did he think he was–some kind of emperor? [
I had been a top software engineering student at Stanford, and it didn’t take long
for me to find like–minded people and start my own company.
Alexander still held a grudge and tried to trip me up at every turn. []
Fortunately, my work was mainly international, while his family’s business, Carter
Enterprises, was focused on domestic projects. []
He didn’t pose much of a threat, but his constant interference was irritating.
Thankfully, my business partner knew about the whole situation and didn’t blame
- me.
But my resentment toward Alexander grew deeper.]
One day, purely by chance, I came across a photo of Emily Lane in a foreign tabloid.
The headline read.
“This woman is a notorious financial scammer.”
name is Emily Lane.”
“She’s reportedly swindled millions from wealthy men in the U.S. before fleeing to
other countries.”
My international client laughed as he recounted the story.
My eyes narrowed. []
Emily… She had studied abroad in the U.S., right?
Could there be a connection between her and this scandal?
I looked at the woman in the photo–blonde hair and bold red lips, a stark contrast
to the demure, innocent image Emily had been presenting lately.
A month later, I received a wedding invitation from Alexander.
“Plenty of rich, beautiful women are dying to marry me now that I’m free.”
“And look at you, still stuck working your life away.“]
“I told you, if you had just apologized back then, we wouldn’t have divorced.”
“You could’ve still been Mrs. Carter, but you chose the hard way!” []
“Bet you regret it now, don’t you?“[]
Alexander’s voice oozed with arrogance over the phone, but my thoughts were
elsewhere.

I remembered the tabloid story about Emily, the financial scammer, and then looked
at the wedding Invite.
The bride was none other than Emily Lane herself.
I forced a smile, my voice dripping with sarcasm,
“Well, congratulations on your new marriage.”
“Let’s hope you don’t regret it. I wish you both all the best–for eternity.”

This is what happens when you dig your own grave.

Alexander let out a cold laugh.
“Regretting your decision now, aren’t you?
“How about getting down on your knees and begging me?”
“Sure, I can’t give you the title of Mrs. Carter anymore, but since you stuck by
through some rough times, I could offer you a job as my secretary.”
“Td visit your place a few times a month, of course.”
“And naturally, you’d have to be a proper mistress and take good care of me.“]
His words made me clench my fists. []
“It’s been a while, but your mouth is even filthier than I remember.“[]
