FOOT MASSAGE
JESS
The house had finally fallen silent, and the occasional creak of floorboards and the refrigerator’s hum were the only sounds cutting through the stillness. Down the hall, I could hear Josh’s heavy snores, muffled by the walls, and downstairs, the faint buzz of Sarah’s music playing low in her room.
Luke and I were curled up in bed, his arm draped lazily over my waist as I nibbled on my lower lip, trying to quiet my restless thoughts.
“You’re thinking too loud again,” Luke murmured, his voice gravelly with sleep as he buried his face in the crook of my neck.
I smiled faintly but said nothing, staring at the faint glow of the moonlight filtering through the curtains.
“Jess,” he said, his tone teasing now, “what’s on your mind?”
I shook my head. “It’s nothing. Go back to sleep.”
He shifted, propping himself up on one elbow to look down at me, his dark eyes glinting with determination. “Not a chance. Come on. Out with it.”
“It’s stupid,” I muttered, avoiding his gaze.
Luke arched a brow. “Try me.”
When I didn’t answer, he grinned mischievously and dipped his

hands to my sides, tickling me until I couldn’t hold back a laugh.
“Luke!” I squealed, squirming beneath him, but he didn’t let up until I was gasping for breath.
“Now,” he said, his voice low and playful, “what’s got you so worked up?”
I turned my head, meeting his gaze, and sighed. “Aren’t you frustrated? That I can’t… you know… right now?”
His expression softened instantly, the humor in his eyes replaced with something deeper. He brushed a strand of hair from my face and leaned down to press a tender kiss to my forehead.
“You are literally growing, my child,” he said softly, his voice laced with awe. “And as fucking attractive as I find you all the time–even pregnant–I get it. This is not the part where I’m selfish.” He kissed the tip of my nose, then my lips, his touch so gentle it made my chest ache. “This is the part where I help you, okay? Stop overthinking me and focus on taking care of you and the baby.”
I let out a shaky sigh, resting my forehead against his chest. “Sometimes, I feel like I’m falling apart,” I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.
He tightened his arms around me, his hand moving to knead the muscles in my neck with expert precision.
“You’re not falling apart,” he murmured against my hair. “You’re stronger than you think.”
His hand slid lower, pulling up one of my legs, and I stilled as his

fingers found the tender spot beneath my foot.
“I heard you tell Laura your feet are swollen,” he whispered, a playful edge to his tone.
A groan of relief escaped me as he began to massage the aching muscles, his thumbs working over the knots with firm, soothing pressure.
“Luke…” I breathed, the tension melting out of me with every pass of his hands.
“Shh,” he murmured, his lips grazing my temple. “Let me take care of you, babe.”
closed my eyes, the warmth of his touch and the steady rhythm of his breathing lulling me into a peaceful haze.
In that moment, with his hands easing the ache in my body and
- his words quieting the doubts in my mind, I felt something I hadn’t in weeks: completely, utterly safe.
I hesitated for a moment, debating whether to bring it up, but the guilt gnawed at me until I couldn’t keep it in.
“There’s something I need to tell you,” I said softly, glancing at him.
“Hmm?” He didn’t stop rubbing my foot, his attention fully on easing my discomfort.
“I, um, I walked in on Sarah… in the bathroom… with one of your friends.” My voice trailed off as my face burned, mortified by the memory.
Luke didn’t miss a beat. He nodded, completely unfazed. “Yeah.

He told me.”
I blinked, caught off guard by his calm response. “Wait–you’re not upset? Or, like, annoyed?”
He shook his head, his lips curving into a small smirk. “What Sarah does and with who? I could care less–as long as it doesn‘ t take place in our house.”
I stared at him, trying to process his nonchalance. “You’re seriously not bothered?”
“Why would I be?” he asked, his tone casual. “She’s a grown woman. What she does is her business, not mine. Just keep the drama out of here, and we’re good.”
“Well,” I said, sinking back into the pillows, “I’m glad you’re not mad because that was… a lot.”
Luke chuckled, resuming the soothing motions of his hands on my foot. “Babe – the only people I concern my thoughts with is you, our baby girl and maybe Josh and Laura if I have time.”
With his touch grounding me and his words easing my mind, I felt a sense of calm settle over me.
