Alexander’s eyes snapped open. The exhaustion weighing down his body disappeared in an instant. His heart, which had felt hollow for days, began to race. Emma was awake. She had clawed her way back to the living, just as he had known she would.
She had fought tooth and nail to make it back, as he had known she would.
A smile curled up on his face, and he forced himself to his feet.
Even with all the painkillers he was administered, his body was still on a roller coaster of pain. His legs trembled, and he sucked in his breath. But he didn’t care. She was awake. She was alive.
The doctors in the room immediately rushed toward him, their eyes wide with concern. “Mr. Black, please, you need to rest!” one of them exclaimed, trying to guide him back to his bed
They all watched with a worried look as he pulled out his IV in one swift movement.
“Bring the wheelchair!” One of the doctors ordered.
“No,” Alexander growled, his voice firm despite the pain coursing through him. “I don’t need it.”
Vivian, who had been watching from the corner, quickly moved to his side. Without a word, she slid under his right arm, looping it over her shoulder to steady him.
“Lean on me brother.” She said, in a voice filled with love.
Annie, who had been standing near the door, stiffened at the sight. Her jaw tightened as Vivian helped Alexander, her jealousy flaring. In an instant, she darted forward, her eyes fixed on Alexander. “Let me help too,” she offered, her voice too
sweet.
But before she could reach him, Kevin stepped in, his movements deliberate. He placed Alexander’s left arm around his neck, effectively blocking Annie.
With each hand around Vivian and Kevin’s necks, they headed to Emma’s room. Once they reached the door, they let go of Alexander and waited at the door as he walked in.

Even though they were now practically strangers, she still knew him well as a man who takes good care of his body.
Alexander lowered himself carefully onto the couch beside her bed, the same spot Jaden had recently vacated. His movements were labored, every motion betraying the physical toll on his body. He combed his fingers through his hair, taking a deep breath before turning to meet her gaze.

Finally, he reached out and took her hand in his. The touch was electric, and Emma felt as if her entire body had frozen in place. She wanted to pull away, but her hand betrayed her, remaining in his firm yet gentle grasp.
“How are you feeling, Emma?” His thick, masculine voice sounded like music to her ears.
Her stomach rumbled with butterflies that she could hardly hold in. Feelings she had tried all her possible best to hold in were now on full display.
Emma couldn’t look away from him even though she tried to. His dark eyes, usually cold and distant, were now brimming with emotions she couldn’t decipher: guilt, pain, and something dangerously close to tenderness. The sight of him staring at her with such raw intensity sent a shiver down her spine.
Emma tried to talk, but her words clogged up in her throat. She only nodded her head in reply.
“I’m so happy you’re here.” Alexander added, and his grip on her tightened.
Emma looked at him in confusion. She has no idea what he was talking about. The Alexander she knew hated her to death, so what could have changed all of a sudden?
“In case you need any help or you don’t feel good anywhere, don’t hesitate to call me. Understood?”
Emma nodded and slowly asked. She has only recently woken up, and she has no idea which hospital she was in. “Where am
I?”
“At my hospital, you were rushed here after the attack. I’m so sorry we showed up late.”
“You have no reason to be sorry for. It wasn’t your fault.”
But just then her last words to him on the day of the attack came rushing back to her, and for a split second, her jaw dropped down in shock, only for her to dismiss the whole interaction as a dream.
At the corner of her eyes, she spotted blood on his cloth and immediately asked. “What happened to you? Are you hurt?” Alexander looked down at the blood and dismissed the whole thing. He lied, saying he had hurt his finger that morning and the blood had somehow dripped on it.
Emma wasn’t buying the story, but she really was in too much pain to give it much thought or argue it out.
Finally, Emma fell asleep, and Alexander took in her beauty for almost ten minutes before he eventually left her room.
