Alexander smiled, his heart swelling. “Of course, sweetheart. I’d love to see them.”
Emma handed over Emily’s drawing book, her fingers brushing against his for the briefest of moments. Their eyes met, and though neither said a word, the weight of unspoken emotions passed between them.
Alexander slowly turned to Emily now, who flipped the pages over to show him colorful and imaginative artwork–to him, each drawing was a masterpiece.
“It is my favorite one,” Emily said, pointing to one drawing with a sun in the middle, around which plenty of bright smiling faces were drawn. Her little finger circled, tracing the images as if explaining the masterpiece to somebody who did not know about its magic yet.
Alexander wrapped his arms tightly around her, overcome suddenly with emotion as a wave of love washed over him. He pressed a light kiss against her forehead and whispered softly, “It’s beautiful, just like you.”
Emily blushed at the compliment, her cheeks turning the softest shade of pink. She looked up at him with her wide, innocent eyes, tilted her head, she said something that completely stopped Alexander’s heart for a couple of seconds.

Alexander blinked, taken aback for a moment. For a moment, the weight of everything, the years of separation, the guilt, the longing,seemed to dissolve in her innocent observation.
He snorted, but it came out much more like a laugh than he had meant for it to. She brought out a side of him he hadn’t felt in ages.
“Really?” he asked, his lips twisting in a smile.
Emily nodded solemnly. “Yeah, kind of.” She paused while her small fingers twisted a strand of her hair. Then, in a voice so simple and pure it made Alexander’s chest ache, she added, “It would have been nice if you were our dad.”
Alexander froze. Though the words were so carelessly spoken, they hit him with the force of a thousand emotions. His heart squeezed painfully, guilt and love colliding in a way that left him speechless. To hear Emily say this almost brought tears to his eyes.
“What if I am?” he asked softly, but in his heart it weighed heavily
Emily tilted forward and weighted his words. “Well. ” she began, but before the words were out, someone else’s spoke, cutting her off.
“It’s ready, Mom,” Vivian said as she entered. Immediately, Emily turned to her, curiosity replacing excitement.
“Oh!” exclaimed Brianna, her eyes shining. “Kids! Want to tour the estate?”
“Yeah!” Ethan and Emily chimed in unison.
