Chapter 20
In Grace’s imagination, powerful families were full of conflicts and dirty tricks, just as in TV series.
To her surprise, everyone in the Morton family was amiable.
Grace was the first girl Lewis had brought home. It went without saying how welcome she was.
Everyone had prepared a gift for her. Lewis’s mom, Tessa Waller, even gave her dowry, a valuable emerald gemstone, to Grace.
“Mrs. Morton, this is too much. It’s too expensive. I can’t take it.” Grace hurried to refuse.
“Why not? You deserve it.” With that, she put it around Grace’s neck.
Grace wore a blackish–green overcoat. Beneath it was a black woolen turtle–neck shirt. The emerald gemstone added a
noble and demure air to her elegance.
Tessa liked Grace. That evening, she called Grace’s family. The two families would meet to set a date for their wedding.
To display the Morton family’s sincerity, Tessa had someone draft the invitations immediately after the phone call. She also transferred 10 million dollars to Grace as a betrothal gift.
“It’s just a gift. Don’t be a stranger,” Tessa smiled and turned around to prepare the wedding.

Grace looked at the zeros in the notification. Her astonishment was beyond words.

She could never make so much money. The Morton family
was too generous.
“I know Ms. Waller well. She’ll hold a grand wedding for you, and it’ll cause a sensation in the city.”
Meanwhile, Grace was also panicky.
Grace was just an ordinary girl all her life. It was beyond her wildest dreams that she’d marry into a wealthy family someday.
All night, she turned and tossed in bed. Sleep didn’t come to her. When she came downstairs for breakfast the next morning, she had deep shadows under her eyes. Edith was startled.
The keen Lewis seemed to read her mind. He just urged Grace to eat because they were going out.
“Where to?” Grace asked.
“You’ll know soon.” Lewis left her hanging.
In the end, he took Grace to the notarial office.
“What’s going on?” Grace looked up and met Lewis’s gentle
eyes.
“I know what you’re worried about. You’ll feel insecure no matter how many jewels and houses I give you.
“In this case, I’ll do this in advance to relieve you of your worries.”

Lewis turned to the clerk and said, “I, Lewis Morton, willingly
give all my shares of the Morton Group to Grace Parrish. They only belong to her no matter what.”
Grace looked at him in shock. Mixed feelings stirred inside her. She couldn’t utter a word.
“I’ll hold a press meeting in a few days. It’s time to restructure the hotels of the Morton Group.” After a pause, Lewis
continued, “I’ll live off you for the rest of my life.”
He held Grace tightly.
This time, Grace also hugged him.
She knew Lewis was only trying to reassure her.
“I won’t say I can stay faithful forever. People are complicated creatures. If I made that promise, even I wouldn’t believe it. But with property and a career, you can live comfortably for the rest of your life, even if bad things happen. Grace, your happiness is my ultimate wish.”
Lewis held a press meeting in a few days.
Elites in the catering and accommodation industries were also invited. Antonio was among them.
Although Dessert Tryst had been purchased, the Kaufman
family’s business started from running hotels.
Grace frowned when she saw the guest list. She was preoccupied.
Lewis sat beside her and said, “If you don’t wanna see him, I won’t invite him.”

“It’s OK.” Grace smiled at him. “I have to face him, anyway!”
Grace had a new name now–Gloria Hale. Lewis opened a dessert bar for her. It had the same name and cooperated with grand hotels and restaurants.
Antonio couldn’t find Grace anywhere. He pulled strings and was told she had died and her ID had been canceled.
“Impossible!” Antonio slammed the desk and jerked up from his chair. “How could she possibly die?”
He thought Grace must be still mad at him and was avoiding him.
“But…her ID has indeed been canceled. And she didn’t go abroad. There’s only one possibility…” The voice of Antonio’s assistant trailed off as Antonio’s face darkened further.
Grace was dead?
How was it possible?
He hadn’t explained everything to her. They had vowed to grow old together.
Antonio remembered how skinny Grace had been that afternoon. The dull, lifeless look in her eyes was still vivid in his head.
Antonio slumped back into the chair, his eyes glassy. He lost it and thundered, “No way! Keep looking!”
Just then, his secretary walked in with an envelope. “Mr. Kaufman, here’s an invitation from the Morton Group. You’re invited to a dinner at the city auditorium tomorrow afternoon.”

Antonio remembered Lewis’s face. He also disappeared with Grace that afternoon. Perhaps he knew something.
Antonio felt hopeful again. “Noted. I’ll be there.”
