Chapter 5
Grace had seen Janelle’s photo in Antonio’s wallet before, but seeing her in person was another story. Janelle hadn’t aged a day.
Janelle approached with a bright smile.
“Gosh, I haven’t been to a party in ages. I heard about this one this morning and thought I’d join in the fun. Hope that’s okay?” she said, glancing at Antonio. When he remained silent, she turned to Grace. “Ms. Parrish, right? I’ve heard so much about you. I’m Tino’s… well, friend.”
Antonio scanned the room with a cold gaze before pulling Janelle aside. “I told you not to show up yet. There’s still something to sort out,” he whispered.
Janelle shook him off. “What is it? We’re just friends, right? Nothing to hide.”
Their voices were hushed, but Grace caught every word.
She didn’t know why they were arguing and didn’t care to find out, so she drifted to a quieter spot.
Antonio and Janelle chatted and drank apart, but their eyes kept meeting across the room.
Everyone knew their history and whispered. “They’ve been on and off for years. Poor Antonio’s current girlfriend.”
“Isn’t Antonio’s current girlfriend a secret? Probably because she can’t hold a candle to Janelle. What a downgrade!”

Suddenly, the room erupted in a ruckus. Grace glanced up to see someone trying to hit on Janelle. That was the last straw for Antonio. He shot up from his seat, grabbed Janelle’s hand, and started to lead her away.
“Are you nuts? You just chat with anyone who comes your way? Have some respect for yourself,” Antonio growled, his voice silencing the entire room.
Now everyone turned to look. Janelle yanked her hand away and smirked. “Who are you to tell me that? Go back to your girlfriend.”
Before Antonio could respond, a few drunken friends came up, calling out, “Hey, he’s your husband! Stop making a scene.”
Antonio glanced back at Grace. His face darkened as he snapped, “You guys, shut up!”
Grace watched the unfolding drama with a calm face, betraying no emotion. Antonio shot her a few more glances, ready to explain. But before he could, Janelle upped the ante by linking arms with a man and heading for the door.
A heavy silence settled over the room, and everyone glanced nervously at Antonio. His face was dark with fury.
Consumed by anger, he grabbed Janelle’s hand and stormed
out.
