Chapter 5
Chapter 5
It’s over, Ronan.
Six years of love and heartbreak–done.
We’re going our separate ways now.
I grabbed my suitcase, turned away from the venue, and hailed a cab to the airport.
Even as the car pulled away, Ronan kept calling.
phone buzzed endlessly with his texts and voicemails.
Staring out at the night sky, I finally understood: holding onto a love that’s already slipped away is pointless. Sometimes, letting go is the only way to set yourself free.
I used to be blind, lost in the haze of love, unable to see how blatantly Ronan favored someone else.
But not anymore.
1 see it clearly now.
And yet, when I stood before my parents‘ gravestones, reality hit me like a freight train–some mistakes can never be undone.
Two gray headstones marked the resting place of their ashes.
My sister stood off to the side, her eyes cold as she looked down at me.
“Mom and Dad passed away six months ago,” she said flatly. “They called you. They texted you. But you didn’t answer a single time.”
Her voice rose, filled with bitterness..
“You abandoned this family for a man. And now, you dare to come back?”
She was shaking with rage, tears glistening in her eyes.
“What are you here for now? You should’ve just stayed out there and never come back!”
I’shook my head, my voice breaking.
“I didn’t know! I never got those messages! I didn’t know they were sick!”
She cut me off with an icy glare.
“Well, you’re too late now. You’re not part of this family anymore. The Carter family doesn’t have a daughter like you.”
Her words pierced through me like knives, forcing me to relive the day everything began to fall apart.
Back then, I had just started dating Ronan.
My parents were furious when they found out I had a boyfriend in college.
My dad, a strict traditionalist, showed up at my campus gate, livid.
“You’re not allowed to date, especially not someone like him–a broke nobody!” he yelled.
When he tried to drag me home, Ronan came running out of nowhere, dropping to his knees.
“I promise I’ll take care of Eve for the rest of my life,” he said, his voice trembling with conviction.
“I’ll give her everything she deserves. I’ll never betray her.”
Moved by his words, I clung to him and defied my father.
