Chapter 10
You’re lying!” Arden screamed.
“It is yours! It was the night of your anniversary–you know exactly what happened, I remember everything, clear as day
She rattled off dates and details, her voice desperate and shrill
That’s when it hit me,
On the night of our anniversary, Ronan had told me he was away on business,
nd waited for him all night, reheating dinner over and over, hoping he’d come back,
While I was sitting alone, he had been with her,
The memory twisted in my stomach, making me physically sick.
Ronan’s face darkened as he coughed, his body shaking with anger.
“When I found you that night, you were unconscious,” he said, his voice trembling.
“Someone else hurt you. I kept quiet to protect you.”
“You’re lying!” Arden shot back, her eyes wide and frantic.
“It was you! You were the first person I saw when I woke up!”
Her voice cracked as she pointed at him.
“The baby is yours! Stop trying to deny it!”
I couldn’t stand to listen anymore.
I didn’t care who was telling the truth or who was lying. I only cared about protecting the life I had rebuilt.
Turning on my heel, I headed for the door, but Ronan grabbed my arm.
“Ifve,” he pleaded, his voice raw.
“I didn’t do it. Please, believe me. Just give me a chance to explain.”
I yanked my arm free, shaking my head with a hollow laugh.
“Ronan, you never gave me a chance to explain when I begged for it. Why should I give you one now?”
His face fell, but I didn’t stop.
“I don’t care who you were with or what you did. It doesn’t matter anymore,” I said, my voice calm but firm.
“Let go, Ronan. It’s over.”
