Chapter 6
-Evan froze.
The words struck him like a slap
My mom tore the ring off and hurled it at him. “Look closely, Evan Carter!”
Catching it with trembling hands, he examined the engraving-“EA,” the initials of our names.
His face went pale.
ad this bracelet? You don’t recognize this either?” she continued, throwing Chloe’s bracelet at his feet.
It was a custom piece Evan had commissioned himself when Chloe was born.
He’d been ecstatic, dancing with joy, and had said he wanted it to bring her lifelong happiness and safety.
Yet now, those blessings were cruelly ironic.
Chloe’s life ended at six years old.
And Evan hadn’t even noticed the keepsakes he had once cherished.
“Ava… Chloe…” he whispered, his voice breaking.
Tears welled up as he stumbled backward, collapsing into a chair.
“Evan!” Lila cried, rushing to his side. “This must be a mistake. Those items could have been stolen or lost. It doesn’t mean anything!”
“Don’t touch me!”
“Hello? Have you found Ava and Chloe yet?” Evan’s voice was cold and sharp with impatience.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Carter,” his secretary replied hesitantly. “There’s no sign of them anywhere. It’s like they’ve vanished into thin air.”
The Rainy Night Butcher had been meticulous, choosing a chapel surrounded by blind spots, far from any surveillance.
Even the most seasoned investigators would struggle to find a single clue.
“Useless! You’re all useless!” Evan roared, hurling his phone across the room.
It shattered against the wall.
It was rare to see him lose control like this.
Everyone in the room froze, stunned by his outburst.
Even I was taken aback.
Wasn’t he the same man who had once scorned me, wishing me gone?
Why the sudden anger?
Was it guilt?
Fear?
I couldn’t understand his emotions, and I doubted he did either.
Moments later, the police arrived.
They carefully placed the severed hands–mine and Chloe’s–into evidence bags.
