Love Story10–Chapter 1
“If you don’t pay for the surgery right now, the patient won’t make it!”
At the entrance of the emergency room, the doctor kept urging me to make the payment.
I was trembling all over, repeatedly texting and calling my husband, John Miller.
After countless hang–ups, the phone finally connected.
Desperately, I said, “John, Mom was seriously injured in the subway collapse. She’s in critical condition at the hospital–please transfer $200,000 to save her life!”
Jen’s cold voice came through the phone, “What money? There’s no money! You keep calling and texting–don’t you ever stop?”
I was still processing his icy tone when I heard a delicate female voice in the background:
“Johnny, the $200,000 you just transferred came through. You’re so sweet, MUA!”
It was the voice of John’s old flame, his ex–girlfriend, Emily James.
Wasn’t he supposed to be on a business trip?
How could he be with Emily?
My hands shook as I frantically dialed John’s number again and again.
“Sorry, the number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.”
Listening to the cold, mechanical voice, I felt as if I had plunged into an ice–cold abyss!
He had blocked me!
I begged the doctor to stabilize Mom’s condition, promising to come up with the money as soon as possible, then rushed out, heading to his office to confront him.
But as soon as I reached the emergency hall, I accidentally bumped into a couple walking closely together.
I quickly bent down to apologize, but when I looked up, I was completely stunned.
The man was none other than my husband, John Miller!
And his arm was wrapped around Emily James’s waist. Emily, soft and boneless, was nestled in John’s arms, her eyes taunting me!
John shielded Emily behind him, his face full of disgust.
“Sarah! Are you stalking me?”
“You bumped into Emily–aren’t you going to apologize?”
I had no time to argue about him holding another woman in front of his own wife. I reached out, trying to grab his arm.
“John, come with me to pay the bill. Mom’s in the emergency room–she needs the money to save her life!”
But he shoved my hand away, frowning, “You’re so annoying!”
“Calling and texting like a lunatic, demanding $20,000–what a nerve!”
“If you’re going to lie about needing money, at least come up with something believable. A subway collapse? Seriously? Who’s ever heard of a subway collapsing?”
My heart raced with anxiety. “I’m not lying! Look it up online if you don’t believe me!”
“We don’t have time–Mom’s injuries are severe. If she doesn’t get the surgery, she’ll die!”
