Thinking about the future, I tossed and turned, unable to sleep. Karry hadn’t returned all night, and I hadn’t called him.
The next morning, I woke up early.
After a shower, I headed downstairs for breakfast. The mansion was eerily silent, and the only sound was my chewing. It
wasn’t until I’d finished that the
housekeeper came to me hesitantly.
“As you instructed, Miss Kane, all the
staff have been dismissed. I’ll return to
your
mother’s house today. Are you sure
you don’t need us anymore?”
“Yes,” I nodded gently. Soon, I
wouldn’t be here.

Seeing his worried expression, I
offered no further explanation. I handed
him a letter and asked him to deliver it to
my parents.
Inside the letter, I detailed my plan
for a staged death and my intention to
disappear. I’d get a new identity and go
overseas in fifteen days. I reassured them not to worry and promised a clandestine
visit once the time was right.
I’d considered taking my parents
with me, but their age, their established life here, and the credibility of the fact
that we were fictional characters made it
impossible. I couldn’t risk alarming them, or making them think I’d lost my mind.
Besides, their simultaneous
disappearance would undoubtedly arouse

Karry’s suspicions. So, I had to leave alone.
With my personal affairs settled, I
turned my attention to Karry. After
dismissing the staff, I carried a basket of
fruit to visit his mother.
I never acted like some spoiled
heiress. Whenever I had free time, I
visited Mrs. Gatesby. I’d bring gifts and
keep her company. Unlike Karry, she
adored me.
“Emily, when are you and Karry
going to get married?”
Mrs. Gatesby brought up the subject
again, and my usual embarrassment was
replaced by a wry smile.
Marriage? It was a fantasy. Aside

from my impending departure in fifteen
days, even if I stayed, it would only lead to
the same disastrous ending as in the book.
Karry only loved Celia. He would never
marry me.
Seeing my silence, Mrs. Gatesby
sighed, yet continued to offer comfort.“I
know Karry well. It’s not that he doesn’t
care about you. It’s just that you guys
started on an….. unconventional basis. It’s
created a barrier between you two. Just
talk it out. Everything will be fine.”
I listened, forcing a smile. I knew the
plot of the novel, knew Karry didn’t love
me at all. The hero’s love would always be
reserved for the heroine. It would never be
diverted to a wicked villainess.

I remained silent, offering no
rebuttal. Then, I pull out a card.
“Mrs. Gatesby, please give this to Karry when you get the chance.”
It was a significant sum of money, a
seed fund I’d prepared years ago for Karry‘ s entrepreneurial dreams. I never had the chance to give it to him because I was
worried about hurting his pride. Now
that I was leaving, I could just entrust it to
his mother.
Hopefully, Karry would remember my kindness and wouldn’t destroy what I‘
d left behind after my “death.”
Mrs. Gatesby noticed I was acting
unlike myself. She asked, “Did you and
Karry have a fight?”

My words were cut short by a cold
