Chapter 196
The negotiation chamber was grand but suffocating. Aurora sat across from Fenrir at a long stone table, the tension between them palpable. Cassian stood to her right, his stance protective, his eyes never leaving Fenrir.
“Let’s get to the point,” Fenrir said smoothly, leaning back in his chair. “The union of our children is the most logical step. You know as well as I do that their bond would secure peace.”
Aurora folded her hands in front of her, her silver eyes piercing. “We’ve made our position clear, Fenrir. Elyra and Dain must be free to choose their own futures. Forcing them into this is not an option.”
Fenrir’s golden eyes narrowed. “This isn’t about forcing anything, Aurora. It’s about ensuring stability. Do you think our packs can afford the chaos that will come without a strong alliance?”
Cassian’s voice cut through the room like ice. “What chaos, Fenrir? Or should I say, what chaos are you planning to create if we don’t agree to your terms?”
Fenrir’s jaw tightened, but his expression remained calm. “You misjudge me, Cassian. My only concern is the well-being of our people. Surely you can see the wisdom in this.”
Aurora’s voice softened, but her resolve remained unshaken. “I understand the risks, Fenrir. But Elyra’s future is not yours to dictate. She’s a child. She deserves the chance to grow up and make her own choices.”
Fenrir stood abruptly, his towering form casting a long shadow. “You’re making a mistake,” he said, his tone low and dangerous. “The world is not as forgiving as you want it to be. If you won’t see reason now, don’t expect my protection when the consequences come.”
Cassian stepped forward, his muscles coiled like a spring. “That sounded like a threat.”
Fenrir smirked, his golden eyes gleaming. “Take it how you will.”
Aurora rose to her feet, her presence commanding. “We’ve given you our answer. If you truly care about peace, you’ll respect it.”
For a moment, Fenrir said nothing, his expression unreadable. Then, with a reluctant nod, he conceded. “Very well. No formal agreement, but know this—our paths will cross again.”
As Aurora and Cassian turned to leave, Aurora couldn’t shake the chill of Fenrir’s darkened expression. Back in their quarters, she took Cassian’s hand.
“He won’t stop, will he?” she asked softly.
