Chapter 74
The camp was unusually quiet the following morning, the air heavy with anticipation. The discovery at the western ruins had shaken the wolves, and though Cassian had yet to announce their next steps, the tension was palpable.
Aurora walked briskly across the central clearing, her mind clouded with thoughts of the Lycan King’s plans. Anica’s words echoed in her head: No more fated mates. No more balance. Only power.
“Luna,” Iris called out, snapping Aurora from her thoughts.
Aurora turned, managing a small smile as Iris jogged to her side.
“I thought you might want to join the patrol,” Iris said, holding up a satchel of supplies. “It’s the northern perimeter. Should be quiet.”
Aurora hesitated. A part of her wanted to retreat to the healer’s quarters and lose herself in routine, but another part longed for the fresh air and distraction the patrol might offer.
“All right,” she said, taking the satchel. “Let’s go.”

The northern perimeter was as peaceful as Iris had promised. The patrol moved steadily through the dense trees, their steps quiet on the forest floor. Aurora trailed near the back of the group, her senses alert despite the calm.
“Thinking too much again?” Iris asked, her tone light.
Aurora gave a soft laugh. “Is it that obvious?”
“You’ve been carrying the weight of the world lately,” Iris replied. “It’s hard not to notice.”
Aurora’s smile faded as she glanced toward the horizon. “I just want to make sure we’re ready. For whatever comes next.”
“You’ve already done more than most would in your position,” Iris said. “Don’t forget that.”
Before Aurora could respond, the wolf leading the patrol raised a hand, signaling for the group to stop.
“What is it?” Iris whispered.
The wolf sniffed the air, his ears perking. “Something’s wrong. Stay close.”
