Chapter 63
Samuel said, “Try it.”
Isabella snapped back to reality. Samuel had a piece of bamboo shoot held up to her lips. Her body grew tense – the chopsticks he was holding had just been in his own mouth.
Should I…? She wondered. But, almost as if guided by something beyond her control, she opened her mouth. With her head lowered, she chewed slowly, thoughtfully.
Samuel’s eyes twinkled with amusement. He reached out with another bite, but Isabella quickly shook her head, refusing. “1 can eat by myself,” she said firmly.
She thought. After all, this is just a marriage of convenience. There’s no need for us to act so… intimate.
Rather than have him feed her the whole meal, she’d much prefer to use the chopsticks herself.
Samuel raised an eyebrow but said nothing. He knew Isabella was calm on the surface, but deep down, she was shy about things like this.
Isabella finally felt a bit more at ease. As the two of them continued their meal, they began to chat softly. The atmosphere between them was suddenly warm, almost pleasant.
At Reception. In the vast lobby of the Howerton Group, Wendy paced back and forth, her face full of anxiety. She had no idea how Perry would handle things when he returned.
Although she had refused to apologize earlier, the words Perry had spoken left her feeling uneasy.
Who is that woman, anyway? Wendy wondered, her mind racing.
Just then, the elevator doors slid open.
Everyone turned in unison to see Perry stepping out.
Many of the onlookers had purposefully lingered, eager to see how Perry would resolve the situation.
With a grim expression, Perry strode over to Wendy and spoke coldly, “Resign and leave on your own.”
Wendy’s face fell immediately. She said, “What?”
She thought, ‘Is this a joke? Is he asking me to quit? It had taken her ages to convince her father to get her a job at Howerton Group. Perry was just an assistant! Had he lost his mind?
Even the people around them were shocked. They thought, Who is that woman, really? They all wondered. After all, even the daughter of a shareholder was being fired
Wendy gritted her teeth, barely holding back her anger. “Perry,” she said coldly, “I’ll say it again: it was her fault. She didn’t have an appointment, so she couldn’t see Mr. Howerton!”
She thought, I was just following protocol, so what did I do wrong?”
Perry let out a cold laugh, his gaze icy as he looked at Wendy. “I’ve already reviewed the security footage. Do you still think it’s a matter of following the rules?”
Perry mused. If not for her jealousy, none of this would have happened.
ut this time, Wendy had crossed a line – right
In the past, he had turned a blind eye to other women with ulterior motives. But t in front of Mrs. Howerton, no less!

“I won’t say it again, Perry warned. “Resign.”
Seeing that Perry was serious about firing her. Wendy began to panic.

She stepped forward, lifting her chin arrogantly as she glared at him. “How dare you fire me? Do you even know who I am?”
She thought. He must not realize that I’m the daughter of a major shareholder. If he knew, he’d never treat me like this
But Perry remained unfazed. “Everyone who makes a mistake faces consequences you’re no exception. Im firing you because of your attitude. You accused someone of seduction without any proof”
“She still hasn’t realized her mistake. He thought with a sigh.
If Wendy hadn’t been the daughter of a shareholder, Perry would’ve had security throw her out by now. He was only wasting his breath out of respect for her father.
But his patience was wearing thin.
At that moment, Wendy snapped. She thought, He knows, and he’s still doing this?
She glared at Perry, her voice shaking with rage. “She was seducing him! How could I be wrong about that?”
The people around them exchanged glances, their expressions changing. They had witnessed everything from the beginning, and it was clear to them now that Wendy had been projecting her insecurities onto someone else.
As their whispers reached Wendy’s ears, her face grew even darker.
Perry hadn’t expected Wendy to be so unreasonable. He snorted coldly. “Does she even need to seduce anyone? Miss Sanchez, stop jumping to conclusions. She’s not someone you can afford to offend. Leave now any more words, and you’ll only embarrass yourself further.”
His words sent a ripple of curiosity through the crowd. They thought, “Not even Wendy could offend this woman? Who on earth is she? They all wondered, growing more desperate to know the full story.
They thought, Thank goodness we didn’t try to side with Wendy earlier. We’d be in serious trouble now.”
Wendy pointed a trembling finger at Perry, her voice full of venom. “You’ll regret this!”
Perry watched her leave, feeling conflicted.
He thought, ‘Wendy, daughter of Robin Sanchez. She’s aligned with Mr. Howerton’s uncle and Mr. Howerton’s uncle has been scheming for power for quite some time now.
Was firing her a good move for Mr. Howerton, or a bad one?’
Just then, he overheard some of his colleagues whispering behind him.
“Wendy is the daughter of a major shareholder. It took a lot of effort to get her a receptionist job, and now she’s been fired!
“Do you think her father will go to the CEO about this? I heard he’s really protective of her.
“Robin holds a significant portion of the company’s shares. If he causes trouble, it’s not going to be easy for the CEO, is it?”
Perry’s face darkened. He turned to them and snapped, “Shouldn’t you all be working instead of gossiping?”
Startled, they scattered immediately.
Isabella finally set her chopsticks down after eating a bit. Thankfully, she had packed enough food. Otherwise, with the way Samuel kept feeding her, she might not have gotten anything for herself. Samuel frowned slightly. She are like a bird.

“Have some more,” he suggested, his voice gentle but firm.
But Isabella shook her head. Tm full,” she said. She didn’t usually eat much anyway.
Samuel was about to say something more when there was a sudden, loud knock on the office door.
Bang! Bang! The noise was jarring.
Isabella frowned. “Who would dare knock so rudely?”
Samuel’s expression darkened, his sharp gaze cutting toward the door as he said icily, “Come in.”

Samuel’s eyes gleamed coldly. “Mr. Sanchez,” he said, his voice dripping with ice, “it seems the older you get, the less class you have.”
A shiver ran through Robin’s heart. Despite living for nearly fifty years, he still felt a hint of fear whenever he saw this youngs
man.
But he couldn’t back down now.
With a stern face, Robin glared at Samuel and snapped, “Your assistant has done something outrageous. So tell me, who’s the one lacking manners here?”
Isabella’s mind raced. ‘No wonder the receptionist felt so bold, she realized. She had someone backing her up someone who dared to be rude to Samuel himself.

Robin stepped forward, his gaze flicking briefly to Isabella. There was a flash of contempt in his eyes as he spoke again, time with a sneer. “Mr. Howerton, just because this woman is good-looking, you’re going to defend her blindly? That’s unlike you!”
