Although Freya was in pain, she felt more of a sense of relief.
“Kieran, I’m a pushover,” Freya said, her tone stern, not at all joking. “Come at me again, and I dare you!”
But Kieran was too worked up to care about what Freya was thinking. As he stood up and moved toward her, Freya, not understanding what had suddenly gotten into Kieran, walked over to the table, grabbed a pair of scissors, and pressed them against her throat.
The drastic action instantly cooled Kieran’s rage. His face darkened as he said, “So, you’d rather die than be with me?”
“Yes,” Freya replied coldly. “Touch me, and I’d rather die!”
Those words hit Kieran hard.
Freya kept a vigilant watch on Kieran’s movements, ready to act if he took one step closer. Seeing a few drops of blood trickling down her neck, Kieran stopped, his voice cold as he declared, “Fine, Freya. From this day forward, we go our separate ways. It’s as if we’re
ad to each other!”
With that, Kieran turned and left Freya’s apartment. When his footsteps had faded, Freya let go of the scissors, her entire body collapsing to the floor, drained of all strength.
“Crazy! Kieran must have lost his mind,” Freya muttered, touching her bleeding lip. She couldn’t fathom why Kieran had acted so out of character, especially when he seemed to despise her, going as far as washing his hands if she merely touched him.
But Kieran was a man of his word. If he said they were through, then they were through. Comforted by this thought, Freya stood up, cursing under her breath at Kieran for being insane.
Freya received the last transfer of a million dollars the following day. Realizing something was off, she immediately checked her messaging app, only to find Kieran had blocked her. That was for the best, Freya thought. While it meant no more daily influx of a million dollars, at least she was clear of Kieran.
Determined to make a clean break, Freya deleted Kieran from her contacts and blocked his number. She then relocated to a more modest apartment near Summit University.
When Neil came to pick her up that afternoon, his expression was indescribable upon seeing her new place.
“Isn’t it a nice place?” Freya inquired, pointing out the amenities. “It’s got a garden, a park, and even an elevator. The facilities are quite decent.”
“Ms. Dawson, if you needed a place to stay, you could have asked Preston to hook you up with a luxury apartment,” Neil remarked, bewildered by the old neighborhood that seemed stuck in the past. “It feels a bit beneath someone of your stature to live here. Don’t you think so?”
Neil had never seen such an outdated living building, looking like it was from two decades ago. The place was a mix of elderly residents and renters, crowded and disorderly. Despite its proximity to Summit University, it was hard to imagine any student choosing to live there.
Freya sighed, “But it’s the closest I could get.”
Given Summit University’s affluent student body, whose parents typically secured nearby upscale properties for their comfort, Freya’s options were limited. Johanna had advised against buying a place near the university, so Freya had stayed on campus. But, with her current situation, returning to campus housing was out of the question.
