“Really now?” Preston’s voice was a mix of challenge and amusement.
“Are you insane? If you’re on a suicide mission, leave me out of it!”
Freya tried to yank the car door open, but it was locked from the outside.
Outside, a traffic cop, who had been ready to forcefully open the door, paused mid–motion as he answered a call on his phone. The surrounding cars, trapped in the sudden blockade, could only wait in frustrated anticipation.
In no time, a patrol car made its way through the congestion.
“Chief Brennan! This is the car! The driver went berserk, drove into a no–entry zone and ignored all attempts to stop him…”
Before the officer could finish, Chief Brennan cut him off, “Enough! Do you have any idea who’s in that car?”
esn’t matter who it is, everyone must follow the law!”
“Follow the law? Did they break it, really? They just took a wrong turn, no harm done. Why are you making such a big deal out of this?” Chief Brennan, red–faced and fuming, pushed past the officers and approached the car.
As the window began to lower, he found himself face to face with Preston.
Remembering made Chief Brennan’s heart pound; he had a clear memory of the drama at the police station recently, when Preston stepped in to handle a sensitive issue involving some female inmates.
“Can we go now?” Preston’s voice was calm, almost casual.
“Of… of course, you can…” stammered Chief Brennan.
As Preston rolled up the window, Chief Brennan hastily cleared the way, allowing Preston to drive off unimpeded.
“Chief Brennan! How can you just let them go like that?”
“What else do you want? One’s Ms. Dawson, and the other, the internationally feared Preston. You wanna mess with them? They didn’t hit and run. Why are you so eager to catch them? Is our police force just here to chase after drivers who take a wrong turn?”
Chief Brennan didn’t want to dwell on the matter any longer. “Get your men back in order. Next time you see this car, steer clear!” With that, he returned to his car, realizing his back was soaked with sweat.
The power Preston wielded was a clear sign that Echo City was on the brink of change.
Meanwhile, Freya couldn’t believe the police would yield to Preston’s influence. “Preston, do you have any idea what you’ve done?” “First time in Echo City, I had to make a memorable entrance.” Preston raised an eyebrow. “Doesn’t Ms. Dawson understand?”
‘You’re stirring up trouble to make a statement in Echo City?”
“It seems Ms. Dawson is smarter than I thought, pretending not to know all day.”
Preston continued, his eyes carrying a hint of menace, though his smile remained. “While you deny involvement in the Southern Suburb affair, you won’t stop investigating. If I find out you’ve lied to me…”
The threat was clear, and under the cover of night, Freya felt an undeniable fear of the man before her. Preston was indeed a formidable figure.
“Ms. Dawson, we’re here.”
Preston gestured for Freya to exit the car. Somehow, they had stopped without her noticing.
Anxious to get out, Freya scrambled with her seatbelt, forgetting to unfasten it. With a simple push of a button, Preston unfastened her seatbelt, his voice soft but stern, “Don’t let me down in tomorrow’s exam.”
