Chapter 9
When Lila was carried out of the prison on a stretcher, everyone could guess what had happened to her.
People hoping to ride the latest wave of attention rushed over to livestream her misery.
As the rescuers yelled:
“Quick, get the defibrillator! She’s going to die!”
The crowd around her erupted in frenzied cheers.
I stood at the edge of the crowd, watching everything with cold detachment.
The ambulance screamed past, with many of the onlookers running after it.
In the commotion, I was knocked to the ground.
My battered hand was stomped on by several people, and the pain made me break out in cold sweat, the dizziness nearly pushing me into shock.
Before I lost consciousness, I thought: if only I could start over.
I’d rather not have ever recognized my biological parents.
The pain of losing my fingers was unbearable, but it didn’t compare to the agony of being abandoned by my own
parents.
Perhaps God heard my prayer, because when I opened my eyes again, I found myself back in my childhood.
Staring at the familiar room and my former family, tears began to fall.
“Lola? What’s wrong? Why are you crying?”
The moment I heard my old name, I sobbed even harder.
Mom held me in her arms and gently soothed me. “Sweetheart, tell Mommy what happened.”
I simply shook my head, clinging tightly to her waist.
“Does Lola not want to leave New York?”
Listening to her words, I suddenly remembered that in my previous life, it was precisely because I left New York that I met my biological parents in a new country.
I nodded decisively, thinking about the friends I had made in this life.
And the one person who had secretly occupied my heart.

Dante.
My heart raced at the thought of him.
Since I had been reborn, not only could I escape from my biological parents, but I could also chase after love!
“Mom, moving so often is affecting my studies. Can I stay in New York?”
That night, my parents debated for a long time whether or not to let me stay.
Meanwhile, I lay in my long–missed bed, eyes closed, thinking about what had happened when I first came to New
York.
Most importantly, I thought about Dante.
The person I had missed in my past life. My greatest regret.
My family and I have never been one to stay in one place due to my parent line of work. We move around so much.
Every girl wants her prince charming, and I met one the day my family and I landed in New York. He was older, but I didn’t care. He looked like he was 18 or 20.
He was my Prince Charming. I am the only girl in my family and Daddy’s princess. I have twin brothers who are almost the same age as the Prince Charming I saw earlier today.
While everyone was preparing their rooms, I sneaked out to go and steal a glance at the drop–dead gorgeous boy outside. He was quite a spaceman.
He looked bored playing alone, so I approached him. I stood while watching him, like a frozen ice cube about to be melted away by the rays of the sun.
“Hi!“I said, and he turned and smiled at me. He had a beautiful smile.
I often hear my brothers talk about girls. I had no idea a man could be this gorgeous. I smiled back at him.
“Hi! My name is Lola.”
He grinned.
“My name is Dante.”
“May I join you in a game?”
“How old are you?” I gave him a puppy–dog expression.
“You’re so adorable when you do that,” he observed.
“I am nine years old.”

The result of my parents‘ discussion was that I was right.
They told me they would look for a housekeeper for me. I was so happy because I got to see my Prince Charming every day.
My family left the country for another country while I remained in New York, close to the one who had stolen my heart without even trying.
I started a brand new life.
Dante’s mother turned out to be my mother and his father my father. After my parents left, Dante and I started sleeping together.
We would share a bed, but nothing ever happened. He was like a brother to me, and I was like a sister to him, so yeah, and I was only 9 years old. He would check on me every morning and make sure I ate.
Things changed, and I became his responsibility rather than what I wanted him to see.
What would a man see in a 9–year–old?
I became very close to his mother, and we would go shopping together and do things a mother and daughter would
- do.
When I turned 13, Dante was the CEO of the Monroe Group. He drove expensive cars and had women all over him.
But he never settled for any of them.
That didn’t bother me much. I mean, he promised to be my prince. But that was a promise he made to a 9–year–old.
Dante would pick me up from school every day, and I would go to his office and watch him work.
