Chapter 16
“Mr. Sterling, please calm down,” the director said, beads of sweat forming on his brow.
“I understand how you’re feeling, but I think you misunderstood me. When I mentioned thawing, I didn’t mean now. I meant it as something possible in the distant future.”
We currently have the technology to freeze a human body without damaging the cells, but thawing–I’m afraid we’re not capable of that just yet.”
“What do you mean, not capable?!”
Damien’s voice rose, his frustration palpable.
“Freezing and thawing should go hand in hand! If you can’t thaw someone, why even offer this freezing service in the first place?”
“Mr. Sterling, please let me explain,” the director said, keeping his voice steady.
“Freezing and thawing are fundamentally different processes. Freezing is relatively simple; if you lower the body’s temperature rapidly enough, you can preserve every cell without
harm.”
“The person is essentially suspended in time–not aging, not decaying. But thawing is another matter entirely.”
He paused to adjust his wire–rimmed glasses, then continued, “Think of a small animal, like a hamster, frozen in a block of ice. Sure, the ice itself is easy to melt–you just apply heat. But what happens if the hamster’s brain thaws before its internal organs?”
“If blood starts flowing through parts of its body while other organs remain frozen, the animal won’t survive. This is the challenge we face with humans.”
“We need to thaw every cell of the body simultaneously, and current technology just isn’t advanced enough to do that.”
The director sighed, his tone shifting to one of regret.
“Even if we could safely thaw Miss Monroe right now, what would be the point? She has

late–stage pancreatic cancer.”
“Modern medicine can’t cure her. Reviving her now would only condemn her to unimaginable suffering.”
This sobering reality hit Damien like a punch to the chest.
He staggered back, suddenly drained of all energy.
es, what was the point of reviving Celeste now?
Her illness was incurable.
Even with all his wealth and resources, he couldn’t save her.
But his heart ached to see her, to explain everything.
He wanted to tell her that everything she believed before being frozen was a lie.
He hadn’t married Isolde.
He hadn’t loved Isolde.
The only person who’d ever filled his heart was her.
His voice broke the heavy silence.
“Where… where is she now?” he asked hoarsely. “I want to see her.”
