Miranda couldn’t help but ask, “What are you up to?”
Carter waved over a waiter and ordered a drink for Miranda.
“Did you see that guy over there?”
Miranda nodded. “Yeah, I saw him. Dressed head–to–toe in designer labels, definitely loaded.”
Just that watch on his wrist must be worth a million dollars.
“Well, that guy’s my uncle,” Carter whispered. “He’s the one I told you about, the one with the lover.”
Miranda was speechless.
“I’m telling you, my uncle’s known as a stand–up guy, a real family man. Never a whisper of scandal. But look at this, I caught him red–handed.”
Miranda asked, “How do you know he’s got a lover?”
Carter leaned in, excited. “You know I was out of town a few days ago? It was because my uncle showed up, and I had to pick him up. Heard the driver say he came to Virell for a young woman. I even eavesdropped on his phone call. Turns out it’s true. This is their meeting spot. Just watch, I’m gonna snap a picture and show my aunt. Let them see his true colors!”
Miranda was silent again. Just then, the man picked up his phone and made a call.
Carter sneered, “Bet he’s calling his lover.”
Suddenly, Miranda’s phone buzzed. She picked it up and answered, “Hey, yeah. I’m here.”
Carter froze, glancing between Miranda and his uncle.
Miranda hung up the phone, meeting Carter’s gaze. “That’s right, I’m your uncle’s lover.”
Carter was flabbergasted. Miranda stood up and started towards Darcy’s table.
Carter hurried after her. “Miranda, what’s going on?? Are you really involved with my uncle?? Why him? Why not me? I’m younger and better looking, aren’t I?”
Darcy heard the commotion and spotted Carter trailing behind Miranda, his face turning an alarming shade of lividity.
What on earth was this brat saying?? And how did he know Miranda? Were they close?
Miranda ignored Carter’s pestering and approached Darcy.
“You called me?”
Darcy adjusted his suit, smiling. “You must be Miranda Hawke. Please, have a seat.”
Miranda sat down and corrected him. “I don’t go by Hawke anymore. It’s Lancaster. Call me Miranda, or Ms.
Lancaster.”
Carter dragged a chair over from another side.
“Aren’t you gonna explain this? Uncle Darcy, what’s going on? You’re not exactly young. Why did you fall for Miranda, she’s just a girl. Do you have any conscience? Is this right?? Tell me, is this right?”
Darcy was baffled by the questions. “What nonsense are you spouting?”
He glanced at Miranda, who was laughing. And then it hit him.
“You thought I was keeping your cousin as a lover??”
“Cousin?” Carter suddenly snapped back to reality. “What did you say?”

Darcy inhaled a deep breath. “Didn’t you notice we all have the same last name, Hawke?”
Carter frowned. “No, she’s Lancaster.”
He paused. “She’s a Hawke?”
Miranda shot Carter a look. “Zip it.”
Carter clammed up immediately. Darcy was taken aback. This was the same Carter who feared nothing and no one, not even his own mother. Yet he listened to Miranda without question?
