Chapter 370
This was absolutely unbelievable.
Darcy cleared his throat and started the introductions. “This is your distant cousin, Miranda.”
Miranda had already figured out who Carter was the moment she saw him. So Darcy’s introduction didn’t surprise her one bit.
Carter asked, “What cousin?”
Immediately, his mind conjured up all the information he’d found online about Miranda.
“You’ve heard of the Hawke family in Zephra, right?” Darcy uttered, taking a deep breath. “It was a pretty big deal, even made headlines nationally. That family is actually an offshoot of our own Hawke family. Her biological father is my generation, so she’s your peer. However, her father was cast out of the family over two decades ago. When trouble hit them, he called us seeking help. But after all he’d done, there was no way we could get involved.”
Darcy’s tone was cold, clearly devoid of any familial affection for this brother of his.
Carter was well aware of the Hawke family in Zephra. He also knew about Miranda’s past–how she was mistakenly given to another family, mistreated by her adoptive parents, and later bullied by her biological parents and brothers.
This history made him want to be kind to Miranda.
He never expected they were actually cousins. There was real family connection there.
His heart was filled with both joy and a hint of disappointment. But at that moment, the joy far outweighed the disappointment.
Darcy looked at Miranda with a sigh. “Your sister’s been through a lot, but to achieve what she has today, you should admire her.”
Miranda curled her lips into a slight smile but said nothing. Her cold gaze was enough to unnerve even someone as seasoned as Darcy.
“What did I achieve? I’m just an ordinary person,” Miranda said. “But I’m curious why someone like you, Mr. Hawke, from a family I’ve severed ties with, would come looking for me.”
Carter didn’t dare say a word. But his curiosity was unbearable, so he covered his mouth, waiting for Miranda to give him the all–clear to speak.
Darcy chuckled lightly. “I’ll cut to the chase then.”
He knew there was no point in playing games with someone smart or in beating around the bush.

Miranda took a sip of her drink. “Yes, and then?”
Darcy continued, “That guy Marion, we both know his background. And that lawyer working for you, Maximus. They’re both talents every headhunter dreams of recruiting. Yet they’re working for you. Am I right?”
He smiled at Miranda, waiting for her response.
Miranda wasn’t surprised. Their identities weren’t exactly top–secret. Anyone determined enough could figure it
out.
“And I’ve heard there’s a prodigy shaking up the medical field lately, who’s also in your circle,” Darcy added, with each revelation making Carter’s eyes widen even more.

“I also know they’ve all done time. They were with you in the same detention center,”
Darcy looked at Miranda, enunciating each word carefully. Miranda put down her drink, a slight smirk playing on her lips. “You’re right, but what does that have to do with you?”
