Chapter 14
AMAYA
I can hear shouts and screams above me, but they seem to be coming from a distance. I feel so dizzy and exhausted to the bone. I can barely stand up straight.
Someone takes Heaven from me while another person grabs me by the arm and leads me into the house. Within seconds, I’m lying atop a bed while Nana tries to clean my shivering body with a wet, warm cloth.
“This is not normal, Jayla…” I hear her whisper. “I can sense a very ugly spirit around Amaya. Something’s not right.”
“Grandma, she started acting strange right after she left for Caesar’s dinner party last night. She can’t remember anything that happened. We’re stuck.”
Nana runs her fingers over the skin of my neck and shuns her eyes. She’s a witch, just like me. But she’s a pure–blood witch, one of the last surviving pure–blood witches of the pack, while I’m only half–witch.
Seconds later, my neck starts to vibrate. I can sense that she’s trying to use her psychic powers to see if they’re any damages to my insides.
“Wait. I feel something.”
Her urgent tone sends shivers up my spine, I try to force my eyes open but they refuse to obey the signals from my brain.
What is it, Nana?”
“I’m not sure, but it’s powerful… and it’s in her liver. My best guess is that she ate something she wasn’t supposed to. Or..”
“Someone drugged her. Jayla completes the sentence.
My blood runs cold. I was drugged? By whom? And what did they give to me!
I’m already starting to panic when Jayla says quickly.
“Well, what are we going to do now, Nana? If the substance in her system is making her sick, she might worsen before sunrise. We need to do something”
Nama wipes my body faster.
“Normally, the combination of her witch and werewolf powers are supposed to help her heal faster than usual, but I believe whatever was given to her has the ability to slow her healing,
I alone cannot combat this. I need help from other witches. They’re the only ones who can help their kind.”
“Witches?” Jayla whispers, sounding more and more frustrated by the minute. “Where are we gonna find other witches! They don’t stay nearby. The few remaining pure–blood witches live very far away”
She’s right. After the Blue Rivers Pack and other surrounding packs kept hunting down and killing the pure–blood witches. they all relocated to a place so far away, even Nana doesn’t know the exact location.
-You know what? Take care of Amaya. I’ll see if I can send a spirit signal to our High Priestess.”
“Okay, Nana”
I hear Nana’s footsteps hurrying away and once again, I struggle to open my eyes but nothing happens. It feels like I’m trapped inside my own skin.
Chapter 14
Jayla grabs my fingers and whispers: “Nana doesn’t like it when we cuss so I’ll keep my voice low when I say this, don’t you dare die on me, bitch. We promised to raise Heaven and Neveal together.
I’m just twenty three. You can’t make me a single mom just yet
Despite my panic, I can’t help but smile at Jayla’s antics.
She sighs deeply.
“Fine, you’re not a bitch. But Heaven needs you. Girl, she’s still crying nonstop and at this rate, I think I’ll join her very soon.”
She wraps her arms around me and lays her head on my shoulder.
“Please be okay, bestie. Wake up so we can find whoever did this to you and kick their ass together”
After what feels like an eternity, Grandma finally returns.
“Nana, how’d it go…” Jay’s excited voice trails off and I know is not good news. “What’s wrong, Nana? What’s with the long face
When Nana speaks, she does sound dull;
“Actually, I was able to reach the witches and they’ve agreed to come down to NewYork to check on Amaya.”
“Wait. Isn’t that good news?”
“It is. But the cost of bringing them down here is quite… exorbitant
“It can’t be that expensive. How much does it cost?”
“The witches stay over ten hours away and we need approximately seven of them to form a Fire Bond of protection for Amaya, including the High Priestess.
A ten–hour flight for seven people would cost anywhere between ten thousand to twenty thousand dollars.”
“Holy fuck!”
“Watch your mouth, kid!”
“Sorry, grandma. But where the heck are we gonna find twenty thousand dollars? Don’t the witches have the power to just teleport down here?”
“I’m sorry but it’s not that easy, Jayla. Although they try to hide it, the Blue Rivers Pack still hunt us and the easiest way they can track us is if we use our powers. Teleporting by seven witches at the same time will release a force field of magic into the atmosphere and if the pack’s sorceress senses it, we’re doomed.”
1 feel a hand on my forehead and soon after, grandma says;
“Amaya’s condition is getting worse. The more we delay, the worser she gets
There’s a very heavy silence after that. I can literally hear the wheels turning in their brains.
Suddenly, Jayla snaps her fingers.
“Aha! I got it.”
“What? What?” Nana asks urgently.

Chapter 14
“I’m sorry, Amaya, but there’s only one person who would give twenty thousand dollars in a heartbeat”
“Child, start talking. Who is this person?”
“Caesar Manchester.”
Grandma sounds confused as hell when she asks;
“Caesar? Doesn’t he hate Amaya
“Maybe he does. But when it comes to her safety, we can ask for whatever we want from him. But we just have to be a little bit dramatic about it…”
CAESAR
“Hello, Simon. Talk to me
“Sir, I’m afraid I’ve got bul news.”
My blood runs cold.
My wolf has been growly and restless ever since Amaya left. I have ten slides to prepare for a seven AM meeting tomorrow but for the past few minutes, I’ve done nothing but sit on the sofa and marvel at how silent and empty the house leas become without Amaya, her children and her crazy best friend.
My fingers tighten over the phone as I rise to my feet.
“What happened to Amaya? Is she okay?”
“That’s the problem, sir. There’s something wrong with Miss Arnaya. She almost fainted today when we arrived at their grandmother’s home.
I was invited into their home to rest a bit and just like you asked I kept my ears on the ground.
Apparently, Miss Amaya is suffering from a fever, headache and shivering.
I can barely breathe past the strange panic in my throat at this point.
We’re just rounding off the call when Henry hurries into the room with a panicked expression and his phone stretched towards me.
“Call for you, sir. It’s Jayla. It seems urgent.”
The moment I hear that name, my chest constricts with dread. I grab it immediately.
“Hello? Jayla?”
“Caesar, you
have to help us!” She screams.
I have to pull the phone away from my ear to protect my ear drums, but Jayla’s distraught voice already has me thinking the
Worst
“What happened? Are you crying?”
“Of course I’m crying! My best friend is dying!!”
I freeze. “What? Amaya?”

Chapter 14
“Yes, Caesar. I don’t know what happened to her on the way to your stupid dinner, but she fainted a moment ago opened her eyes since. This is all your fault! What if she doesn’t wake up?”
“Don’t fucking say that!” I snap. “Have you taken her to the hospital?”
“This matter is out of any hospital’s control, Caesar. My Nana is witch and she already has a solution.”
“What’s the solution?”
Three minutes later, Jayla is rounding off her explanation.
now, the problem is, we don’t have the money to bring the witches down here and…”
“Where exactly are they located? I’ll send a jet to them. It’ll be faster.”
There’s a slight pause on the other end.
and hasn’t
“Well you
werewolves would not leave them the fuck alone, now no one knows where they’re hiding. The witches don’t want a jet, Caesar. They wanna come down here on their own.”
I fist my fingers to stop myself from punching something.
“Twenty thousand dollars.”
Til send forty thousand. And Jayla?”
“Yes”
“Ask the witches to get here as fast as they can. Nothing should happen to Amaya.”
I end the call and turn to Henry:
“Jayla will send an account number to you. Ask the secretary to transfer forty thousand dollars into that account immediately.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And Henry, ask the driver to be on standby. We’ll be leaving for the pack’s extension in the next five minutes.”
TWO HOURS LATER
The money has been transferred and I got
ot confirmation from Jayla two hours ago that the witches are on their way.
We arrive at their grandma’s house and the driver comes around to open
my
door.
Thank you, James.”
I take one look at the rundown, old wooden structure and my lips twist with shock and disgust.
“Henry, are you sure this is the place? Does Jayla’s grandma really stay here?”
Henry looks down at his iPad “Yes, sir. This is the place.”
I take one step forward and immediately, my sensitive wolf nose is assailed with a delicious flowery scent. Amaya’s scent.
Chapter 14
The scent isn’t as strong as it’s supposed to be, probably because he’s actually sick.
But at least I have confirmation that I’m in the right place. Now’s time to see what’s really going on for myself
