Chapter 28
AMAYA
The room is as silent as a tomb as Solomon’s fingers fly over the keys of his laptop. We’re all tense. I can feel it. Suddenly, a sound pierces the otherwise quiet air from the laptop. It takes a moment to realize that it’s Dark Hair’s voice:
“I thought. I thought you would even go for a position that’s more suitable for your appearance. How and believe you’ll ever get the chance to work here as a secretary Oh, please.”
can you look like that
My heart tightens in my chest. Those were the exact words she said to me two days ago. I think I’d remember them for the rest of my life.
In front of me, Brianna is making a show of shaking and acting surprised.
“You look shocked.” Solomon states, his voice resembling a low sparl. “It’s almost like you didn’t say those things.”
“Sir. I don’t think I…”
Solomon’s blue eyes darken dangerously. “You’re still claiming that you said nothing wrong? Why don’t we listen to the next sound then
He redirects his attention to the laptop once again and scrolls through it. Barely ten seconds later, Brianna’s voice fills the room once again;
Looking like that, with those awful clothes and awful red hair, you’re lucky if you even get appointed as the toilet cleaner I’d take my CV and leave if I were you.”
I hear the sound of a chair scraping against the marble floors and look up to find Caesar seated at the very edge of his seat, looking completely murderous.
I have no idea why Solomon is doing this. Is it because of Caesar? Was this his idea?
Solomon switches off his laptop and leans back in his seat, literally glowing with dark energy. I’m guessing he’s one of the alphas of the BlueRivers Pack who are more active in the city than back at the pack grounds, but he seems more powerful than any other alphas I’ve ever met Powerful and mysterious.
“I wasn’t aware that Macpherson Engineering appointed you as its head of appearances and judge of new employees, Brianna, Congratulations.”
Brianna’s entire face is red with guilt. “I really didn’t mean any of it, sir. I apologize.”
“You didn’t mean any of it. Solomon scoffs. “Even though I never intended to employ Amaya in my establishment, do you realize just how negatively your words could have affected her or anyone else who was in her shoes?” He suddenly whips his head in Misha’s direction; “and I’m quite disappointed in you, Misha. I expected you to defend this company. To defend me But you just kept silent and agreed with whatever Brianna said.
“I’m really sorry, sir.” Misha lowers her head, looking genuinely upset. “It will never happen again, sir. I apologize.”
Solomon flicks a glance at me, staring steadily at my shocked expression.
“Do you even know who this lady is? Do you realize her importance to this company?”
I blink in surprise. What the hell is he talking about now!
“No, sir” Misha replies, her voice shaky
te heaves a sigh. “You just disrespected the future daughter–in–law of the Manchester Royal family. Miss Amaya is

Caesar’s fiancée. His future–wife,”
Wait, what? My mouth hangs open in shock as my gaze strays from Solomon to Caesar, waiting for him to refute his claims He does no such thing. Instead, Carcar sits back comfortably and gives me a smug look.
I open my mouth to speak but turns out, Solomon is not done,
“I called both of you here so you can tender an apology to Miss Amaya personally. My associate owns a quarter of this company and when they get married, his wife will also own that quarter by extension. You disrespected your future boss and now, you both have to apologize. Do it. Now,”
My tongue is stuck to the roof of my mouth as Misha and Brianna turn in my direction. Misha looks genuinely shocked and sorry while Brianna stares daggers at me, her eyes burning with a mixture of jealousy and anger.
“We’re sorry, Miss Amaya.” They both chorus.
I force myself to nod. “Yes. It’s okay.” I whisper.
“Amaya, do you accept their apology?”
I look up quickly and nod, totally distracted. “Yes, of course I do. It’s fine.”
“That’s good then. Brianna and Misha, you can both leave now. But I’ll be down to address your actions later
“Yes, sir.” They chorus as they walk out the door.
When I’m sure they’re totally gone, I snap my head in Solomon’s direction, choosing to ignore Caesar for the sake of my mental health.
“Sir, I’m not engaged to your… associate. Where did you get that idea?”
Solomon raises a brow at me.
“You’re not? Caesar doesn’t seem to think so
1 shut my eyes and take a deep breath.
“You know what, sir? I’m here because of the interview. Is it okay if we start now?”
The smirk on Solomon’s face disappears as he calmly sits up.
“About that. Is there something you’re not telling me, miss Amaya?”
My pulse accelerates with panic but I simply swallow and shake my head. “Not at all, sir. Everything you need to know is right there in my CV”
He nods. “Great. Then I’m sorry but I cannot give you this job.”
It takes me a full moment to assimilate his sentence. “Wh–what? Why?”
Caesar speaks up; “it appears you did not inform your future boss that you just gave birth barely three weeks ago. I took t liberty to give him that information. I already told you, Amaya: no company will employ a nursing mother. You should li listened to me.”
Anger, raw and violent, zings through my veins. I open my mouth to speak but snap it back shut. There’s nothing I can s to leverage the situation after all.
“I’m sorry. Miss Amaya, but there’s nothing I can do. We have a strict no new mothers policy. We can only employ new mothers when their babies are three months old and above and they’ve gotten enough rest after childbirth. Once ag

apologize
I can feel Caron’s eyes on me I can feel that he expects me to explode at him, shout and scream. But, no. I’m too exhausted
in for that I just want to go back to the inn and drown my sorrows jelly.
I get to my feet slowly and nod, ignoring the tears forming at the back of my throat.
“That’s perfectly fine, sir. Thank you for having me. I’ll take my leave now.”
I can still feel Caesar’s eyes burning a hole in the back of my head as I exit the office, head lowered.
I’ve already dragged my melancholic self down the rest of the hall when I suddenly hear footsteps behind me.
“Amaya! Wait up!”
1 freeze in my tracks for a second. Once it dawns on me that the voice belongs to Caesar, I resume walking, picking up my pace to make sure I don’t get to talk to him.
Seconds later, he wraps his fingers around my arm and spins me around, almost sending me crashing against his chest. When our eyes meet, hivare dark and burning with annoyance.
“Didn’t you hear when I asked you to stop?”
I can feel the anger slowly making its way up my throat. I take a deep breath to control it; “I have somewhere to be. Let go, please?
We have to talk.”
I give him an incredulous look; “I don’t think we have anything to talk about Mr. Manchester. Let go. Now.”
“Amaya…
“I’m warning you, sir. Please let go.”
“Amaya, listen to me…”
That’s it. I finally snap. I have no idea when I lash out, but the last thing I remember is swinging my arm. Now, my palm is stinging and Caesar is currently rubbing his cheek, his eyes gleaming with shock.
My actions suddenly dawn on me and I look down at my palm in shock.
I slapped Caesar. I slapped him.
“You’ll regret that, Firefly. I promise you…”
