Clark knew he was cornered. There were three police cars and at least six officers in front of him, along with those idiots–Kris, Alden, Luisa, and Zeke.
His eyes darted around. If he could run around the house into the backyard, maybe he could scale the wall and escape. Before he could even take a step, one of the officers warned him.
“Don’t even think about it, sir, or we’ll be forced to shoot.”
Clark froze, knowing the officer wasn’t bluffing. He would be an idiot to try and escape now. Even if he tried, his wounded thigh would keep him from getting far. He was fucked for now, but far from giving up.
Three officers came towards him, spreading out on each side of him until they finally got to him. Though he wasn’t trying to resist, one of them swept his legs from under him, sending him crashing down on the hard, rocky pavement.
Pain shot through his thigh, but he bit back a cry, refusing to give them the satisfaction. He lay still as they cuffed his hands behind his back.
Once they were done manhandling him, the officers hauled him to his feet and began leading him toward one of the police cars.
He glared at Luisa as he limped on. Why couldn’t she have just died? Why the fuck did she have to survive.
“Don’t you dare fucking look at her, you bastard!” Alden spat, storming forward and slamming a fist into Clark’s mouth. “How dare you send those goons after her?”
An officer immediately held Alden back. “You have no right to hit him, sir. You could be charged with assault.”
“Assault?” Zeke stepped forward, his voice hard with anger. “That scumbag tried to have my sister killed! He’s a criminal!”
“He’s only a suspect,” the officer reminded him. “The court decides whether he’s guilty or not.”
Though Alden and Zeke were the ones attacking him, Clark didn’t look at them. His eyes were still burning with hate as he locked gazes with Kris.
“Don’t think you’ve won, Miller. I’ll bounce back.”
At that moment, the only thing Kris cared about was Thalassa’s safety. His nostrils flared as he glared back at Clark. “Pray you didn’t hurt Thalassa, because if you have, then jail would be too easy for you. I will kill you myself.”
“Sir, you can’t make threats in front of law enfor-” one of the officers started to speak but Kris didn’t wait to
hear the rest.
He stormed towards the house with Luisa, Alden, and Zeke along with two officers following. Getting to the porch, Luisa quickly locked the door.
“Oh God,” she gasped when the door opened, revealing a trail of blood.
They rushed inside, but Kris was the fastest. Thalassa stood in the living room, her gun still raised. She lowered it when she saw that it was them.
Without hesitation, Kris cupped her face in his hands. Thalassa tensed as he gazed at her with his frantic eyes. ” Lassa… are you okay? Did that bastard hurt you?”
He wanted to hug her but he didn’t want to stain her dress with his blood. He was also afraid she’d push him away.

However, she didn’t step back from his touch as she responded.
“I’m fine. I was the one who shot him.”
“Oh, Lassa, I’m so glad you’re okay,” Luisa said, rushing rushing forward.
Kris reluctantly released Thalassa so her best friend could embrace her. Stepping back, he felt a wave of dizziness but forced himself to keep steady on his feet.
Thalassa noticed the blood that had soaked through his shirt from his sleeve to his chest, but before she could say anything, Luisa engulfed her in a hug.
Luisa breathed a sigh of relief. “When I called and you said Clark was already here, I was so scared he would hurt you,‘
The two women hugged for several moments as the men watched. One man wished he was in Thalassa’s place, while two of them wished they were in Luisa’s.
“I hate to interrupt, but I have a few questions for you, miss,” one of the officers said, causing Thalassa and Luisa to break apart.
“Does that gun belong to you, or is it Clark Morgan’s?” the officer asked.
“It’s mine. It’s registered.”
“Even if it wasn’t registered, would it matter?” Kris snapped. “She was the one attacked.”
“Sir, I don’t doubt this was self–defense. I just need to establish the facts to build a case,” the officer replied calmly. He turned back to Thalassa. “I’m sorry, but the gun is evidence and I have to take it with me.
Thalassa didn’t protest. She handed the gun over, and the officer placed it in a plastic bag before sealing it. “It’ll be returned after the investigation. Thanks for your cooperation. I’ll also need you to come to the station to give a statement, like the rest of your friends.”
Before leaving, the officer glanced at Kris’s blood soaked shirt. “You really should get that checked out, sir.”
After the officers left, Thalassa turned to Kris. “What happened to you?”
“One of the men who chased me was about to shoot me, but Kris pushed me out of the way and ended up getting shot in the shoulder,” Luisa explained.
Thalassa’s eyes widened. She’d noticed the blood on his shirt but assumed it was someone else’s since Kris had showed no signs of pain. She stared at him.
“You were shot and you still haven’t gone to the hospital?”
For the first time, Kris saw an emotion in her eyes that he hadn’t seen directed at him in a long time–worry. His throat tightened with emotion.
“It’s not that bad. It doesn’t even compare to the pain I would’ve feel if that bastard had hurt you.” Kris assured her, but his voice had gotten weaker.
The police had insisted on calling an ambulance after arresting Clark’s men, but Kris had refused. He barely felt the pain on the way there because his only concern had been Thalassa. But now that he knew she was fine, he was finally began to feel the effects.
Thalassa shook her head firmly. “You need to get that bullet out, Kris. And look at how much blood you’ve lost. I know you hate hospitals, but you have to go.”

But even as he spoke, his vision blurred, and his legs wobbled. He tried to stay upright but Alden noticed the shift and asked, “Kris, are you okay?”
“Of course I am. It’s not… it’s not like I was shot in the head. It’s just my shoulder and—”
The room spun. Kris tried to keep standing, to fight the wave of dizziness, but his body had endured the blood lost for too long. His legs finally gave in, everything turning black.
