Chapter 7 I Want a Grandson
Grace was about to put the phone back in her pocket, but it rang again. She frowned and checked on it. It was a call from Antonio.
“Where are you?” His voice came through the phone and sounded impatient. “It’s late. You should be home.”
Grace looked down on her wrist. It was 9:30 pm. She sneered, “I’m just taking a walk. Everything is ready for our wedding tomorrow. There’s nothing to worry about.”
Antonio’s tone softened a little, but it was still tinged with impatience. “It’s our wedding tomorrow, don’t roam around. Come home, I’ll go get you.”
“There’s no need,” she answered briefly and hung up.
More than 10 minutes later, Antonio’s car parked in front of her anyway. He lowered the car window and said indifferently, “Get in. My mom invites you for dinner. Don’t keep them waiting.”
She didn’t refuse him and got into the backseat of the car. She knew, the passenger’s seat already belonged to another
woman.
The car arrived at the Kaufman’s villa. Smoothing piano music sounded inside the car, which was both familiar and strange to her. She looked out the window. Neon lights on both sides of the street and a starry sky gave the city a dreamy, distant look.

“Why do you suddenly wanna take a walk?” he asked tentatively.
“Nothing, it’s just a walk,” she answered in a calm voice.
Grace leaned on the car window, watching the city’s night slowly light up with neon. It was so quiet inside the car. Antonio was focused on driving and didn’t say a word again.
When they reached the villa, it was already dark. The huge. villa was covered under warm lights. The car turned into the long flagstone road, with its well–trimmed roadside
shrubbery, and the family name emblazoned on the iron gate, which stood out in the light.
The villa was built adjacent to a hill, and occupied an extensive area, with a garden in the courtyard, and a fine fountain in the center. Grace stood in front of the door, looking up at the grand villa, feeling very distant.
It was bustling in the living room. Antonio’s parents were sitting on the couch and chatting. The table was covered with costly refreshments. Servants went back and forth with fresh fruit and wine, as if warming up for a celebratory feast.
Grace went into the living room but noticed that their dinner table had been cleared. Only a few dessert dishes remained.
“Grace, there you are,” Ingrid smiled and said once she saw her. “Come over here. We’ve been waiting for you.”
Grace smiled and sat down beside her. Ingrid took her hand and said meaningfully, “Grace, you’ll soon become part this family. After the two of you get married, you should quit your job. Just stay home and take care of Antonio. You know, I’m really looking forward to having a grandson.”

“I’m not planning to quit my job yet,” Grace said in a soft voice, but it somehow sounded alienated.
Ingrid frowned slightly. “Just take your time, then. But you’ll soon be my daughter–in–law, and you should think about the entire family.”
Grace said nothing more, but only picked up a cup of tea and took a sip.
After the dessert, Antonio checked the time and then said to Grace, “Let’s go to the bridal shop. Your dress is ready. You should try it on to make sure it fits.”
Grace nodded and followed him to leave.
