Chapter 7

I was silent. Julian’s perfect jawline twitched like a faulty hologram. The phone kept screaming–first calls, then video invites, finally text missiles blowing up his screen. The atmosphere grew tense.
“You’re not gonna get that?” My voice could frost vodka.
Julian picked up his mobile phone, turned it off directly and put it back on the bedside table.
He touched my forehead.“Still warm. Just sleep, I’ll watch over you.”
I lie back down and close my eyes. After an hour, my breathing became even.
Julian picked up his mobile phone, tiptoed to the balcony, and dialed a number after reading the messages.
“Are you alright? Don’t be afraid, I’ll come right away…” He said in a low voice.
Then, he went back to the room, took his coat and went out.
Behind him, I quietly opened my eyes. I didn’t sleep the whole time. I actually didn’t know what I had been expecting. Changed men were like spoiled fruit, they would only get worse…
At 4:30 am, Julian came back. Seeing that I was still asleep, he breathed a sigh of relief and then touched my forehead. It was no longer hot. He went to the bathroom to take a bath. A moment later, he came out in his robe and lay down next to me, his arm around
my waist.
He fell asleep. I gently removed his arm around me and sat up, looking at him coldly. He was still handsome, with his thin lips and sexy Adam’s apple…
My eye fell on the bite marks on his collarbone. I felt like I had been stabbed in the chest.
He was so dirty… At this moment, I even wanted to smother him with a pillow.
When Julian woke up, I had already got up. He came downstairs.
I had made breakfast for two, and asked him to come and eat.
“Your fever just broke. Why don’t you get some more rest?” He came over and tried to touch my forehead, but I ducked away without a trace.“Just a cold.” I took off my apron and sat down.
He looked a little embarrassed, but seeing that I was no longer angry, he didn’t think much of it. He sat down.
“I want to discuss something with you.” I said.
“What is it? he asked, taking a sip of his juice.
“I want to quit. My words surprised him. I explained, “I have worked for a long time and I
feel tired. I want to experience the easy life of being a rich woman.”
He stared at me as if to judge whether I was telling the truth or not.
“Are you sure you’re not kidding me?”
“Yeah. What, you think I’m a masochist who won’t enjoy life?” I asked back with a smile.
He thought for a moment, and then agreed.“Stay home then, and we can take the chance to have a child.”
I smiled and refused to confirm or deny.
Oh honey, you want a broodmare while screwing your sweetheart? Rot in hell.
“I’ll submit my resignation this week. I’m going to Europe with Sherry. I haven’t traveled for a long time.”

“Her law firm allows that?”
“Yeah, she made time for me.” I said with a smile.
His throat tightened with unspoken words. When he finally spoke, it carried the weight of boardroom negotiations:“I’ll arrange everything. Just enjoy the trip.”
I let silence stretch like taffy. Enjoy the final act, dear husband.

The gash on my forehead pulsed like a shameful neon sign. I extended my medical leave. With enough time, I slowly sorted out my things and moved them to the new house one by one.
Julian didn’t notice. Even when I took our wedding photos to the yard and burned them in front of him, he just looked down at his phone, chuckling and typing. If he would just take a second to look out the window…
I stood in the sunset, looking at his happy face. I didn’t look away until the lighter burned the tips of my fingers.
I smiled bitterly as I watched flames lick our frozen grins… Then, our faces were twisted, burned, and finally turned into a black ash…
The feeling of suffocation came over me, and I looked at the ash with a blur in my eyes.
“What are you burning? Julian finally found something strange and asked.
I looked
up and tried to restrain my emotions.“Nothing, just some…useless rubbish.” I blinked back acid tears.
