Caffrey was speechless. Although they spoke quietly, their words reached everyone’s ears. Rita’s mind replayed his wands, “I love my wife“… Those words felt like tendrils of hell, crawling over her soul.
Julian returned to the table, his face cold.“The wedding is off. I won’t consent. As for the project…continuing is fine. If you want to cancel, I have no objections either.” He glanced at his mother.“Let’s go. We have more to discuss.” He meant the damage control surrounding the explosive statement,
The Gu family erupted in fury, Except for the stunned Rita and the relatively calm Caffrey, everyone wanted to tear Julian apart.
“Julian, do you think the Crowe family is some pushover? You think you can just call off the wedding and sweep this under the rug? You wish! You won’t get away with this without making amends to my sister! Forget about canceling the projects from now on, we’re enemies!”
“If the Shaw family dares to backtrack, we’ll make the Wen family disappear from Chicago!”
“If anything happens to my daughter, I’ll destroy you! I’ll make sure everyone knows you’re a scoundrel who seduces and abandons women!”
The accusations were deafening, making Shaw Huishan’s head spin. Jiang Wenhui remained in a daze.
Julian sneered.“Go ahead.” He didn’t bother refuting how Rita, with Caffrey’s help, had drugged him and seduced him into that affair. It was a filthy affair devoid of love, not a case of him “deceiving” her. She was the one who was promiscuous, and he was the one who fell for it. It was simply a squalid affair where he’d succumbed to temptation and enjoyed her advances.
Seeing his unwavering coldness, the Crowes were in a bind. Canceling the project would hurt them, and a full–blown war with the Shaw family wouldn’t benefit them either. The situation reached an impasse.
Outside, Caffrey’s secretary rushed in, her face grim, ignoring the explosive scene. She leaned close to him, her voice urgent.“Jones Group Bank has put a hold on the second installment for the the Shaw Corp project, pending review.”
Caffrey frowned.“What’s this? Did you call Su’s assistant? What’s the reason?”
The secretary, glancing at the tense scene inside, stammered, “I did. She said it was the CEO’s order. The reason…” she hesitated, then said each word slowly, “…due to the recent negative publicity surrounding the project company, which could impact its ability to repay on time, thus requiring re–evaluation.”
Caffrey felt a chill run down his spine. Everyone in the room froze…
