Evan’s words hung heavy in the air, chillingly accurate. It was as if he possessed omniscience, predicting their clash over the wedding and its ripple effect on the project.
Caffrey steadied himself. Was this a capricious act of spite, or a shrewd move to cut their losses? If the latter, this man was terrifyingly perceptive. He exchanged a fleeting glance with Julian. A stalled project would cripple both the Shaw Corp and Crowe Group–they were in this together. Julian’s expression was unreadable. The other members of both families looked equally grim…Why did Evan always have to interfere, fanning the flames?
“Heh…” A derisive laugh broke the silence. All eyes turned to Rita, who stood before Julian, a slow, deliberate movement.“What good is your love for Olivia? She’s already moved on–she’s sleeping with Evan. That’s why he’s sticking up for her.” Within her limited worldview, it made perfect sense.
Julian’s face was like ice.“They have no inappropriate relationship.” He’d had his suspicions, but after seeing Olivia and Sherry’s chat logs last night, and after Evan’s words, he believed them. But with Evan’s blatant protection, would she ever truly not fall for him? A bitter taste filled Julian’s mouth; he didn’t dare think about the future…
“In your mind, she’s so pure and innocent that she’d never cheat?” Seeing his distraction, knowing he was thinking of Olivia, she clenched her fists, her teeth gritted. She hated him for defending her.
Julian looked at her, a cold mockery in his eyes.“Wasn’t it *I* who cheated? I admit my mistake, but she’s always been a good girl. I was the one who failed her.” People only realize what they’ve lost once it’s gone. She’d given up her dream major for him, endured his family’s criticism, and steadfastly married him… She was intelligent, kind, strong, never easily angered. He had been blessed with the good life and now sought hardship.
Rita’s face twisted.“She’s a good girl, and I’m the bad guy? What was our relationship then?”
Julian’s gaze was empty, as if looking at a corpse.“What do you think…”
Rita screamed, grabbing a knife from the table and slashing at her neck. The Gu family panicked, trying to wrestle the knife away. Julian didn’t even glance back, turning to leave. He’d seen this drama countless times; let her die if she wanted to.
Shaw Huishan and Jiang Wenhui rose and left, their faces grim. Rita cried out, even as Julian departed, “Come back! You’ll regret this! You’ll regret it!”
He didn’t look back. The Gu family took the knife, and Caffrey, after calming his sister down, followed Julian. He had a massive headache. He regretted letting his sister run wild. Now, things were a complete mess, complicated further by Evan’s meddling.
